A newborn baby has been rescued from a sewage pipe directly below a toilet in China.
The baby boy, believed to be just a couple of days old, was saved by firefighters in Jinhua city, Zhejiang province on Saturday.
Having failed to pull the baby out of the sewage pipe at the apartment block after residents reported hearing an infant crying, rescuers were forced to saw through a section of the pipe to free the child.
The baby has since been taken to hospital and is said to be in a stable condition.
The story has sparked anger in China, with social media users calling for the child?s parents to be ?severely punished?.
One user wrote on the popular weibo site: ?The parents who did this have hearts even filthier than that sewage pipe.?
There continues to be numerous reports in the Chinese media of ?babies being abandoned, with the problem being attributed to the country?s strict planning rules and the fact boys are seen as of greater value in some communities.
The newborn baby rescued in Jinhua city has reportedly been named Baby No 59 after the number of his incubator.
Police are still searching for his mother and are treating the case as an attempted homicide.
