Mexico Elections Raise Fears

MEXICO CITY ? Elections for a key border governorship and state legislatures and mayorships in 13 other Mexican states have raised tempers and fears that violence may be becoming endemic in local Mexican politics.

Up for grabs is the governorship of the border state of Baja California, the first statehouse won by the opposition in 1989. The ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party is looking to win back the state.

The conservative National Action Party needs to hold on to the Baja governorship. A loss there could lead the party to pull out of a united front it has formed with ruling party to enact key national reforms.

And reports continued to stream in Sunday of confrontations, scuffles or electoral violations in the other 13 states where voters are electing mayors and state legislators.
