Scorching heat bakes Western states

DEATH VALLEY, Calif. (AP) ? Scorching heat blistered the Southwest on Saturday, where highs between 115 and 120 degrees were expected for parts of Arizona, Nevada and California through the weekend.

Forecasters said temperatures in sunbaked Las Vegas could match the record of 117 degrees Saturday. Phoenix also was expected to hit that mark, matching the record for June 29 set in 1994. And large swaths of California sweltered under extreme heat warnings, which are expected to last into Tuesday night ? and maybe even longer.

Dan Kail was vacationing in Las Vegas when he heard that the temperature at California's Death Valley could approach 130 degrees this weekend. He didn't hesitate to make a trip to the desert location that is typically the hottest place on the planet.

"Coming to Death Valley in the summertime has always been on the top of my bucket list," the 67-year-old Pittsburgh man said. "When I found out it might set a record I rented a car and drove straight over. If it goes above 130 I will have something to brag about."

The forecast called for Death Valley to reach 128 degrees Saturday as part of a heat wave that has caused large parts of the western U.S. to suffer. Death Valley's record high of 134 degrees, set a century ago, stands as the highest temperature ever recorded on Earth.

A couple hours south in Baker, the temperature was expected to peak at 120 degrees in the road tripper's oasis in the Mojave Desert on Interstate 15. The strip of gas stations and restaurants between Los Angeles and Las Vegas is known by travelers for the giant thermometer that often notes temperatures in the triple digits.

At the Mad Greek restaurant there, a waitress called out orders for "Chocolate shake! Strawberry shake!" while the temperature hovered at 112 degrees during the lunch rush.

Downtown Los Angeles was expected to hit 91 degrees, 7 degrees shy of its record.

To make matters worse in California, National Weather Service meteorologists John Dumas said cooling ocean breezes haven't been traveling far enough inland overnight to fan Southern California's overheated valleys and deserts.

Burbank set a record overnight low with temperatures dipping to 74 degrees overnight, much warmer than the previous record of 68 degrees for Saturday's early hours.

In Northern California, temperatures Saturday were expected to reach the 80s in San Francisco, upper 90s in San Jose and into the triple digits inland, about 20 degrees above typical highs in the Bay area.

Farther north, triple-digit temps were expected in Sacramento on Saturday and Sunday.

Health officials warned people to be extremely careful when venturing outdoors. The risks include not only dehydration and heat stroke but burns from the concrete and asphalt. Dogs can suffer burns and blisters on their paws by walking on hot pavement.

Cooling stations were set up to shelter the homeless and elderly people who can't afford to run their air conditioners. In Phoenix, Joe Arpaio, the famously hard-nosed sheriff who runs a tent jail, planned to distribute ice cream and cold towels to inmates this weekend.

Officials said personnel were added to the Border Patrol's search-and-rescue unit because of the danger to people trying to slip across the Mexican border. At least seven people have been found dead in the last week in Arizona after falling victim to the brutal desert heat.

Temperatures are also expected to soar across Utah and into Wyoming and Idaho, with triple-digit heat forecast for the Boise area. Cities in Washington state that are better known for cool, rainy weather should break the 90s next week.

The heat was so punishing that rangers took up positions at trailheads at Lake Mead in Nevada to persuade people not to hike. Zookeepers in Phoenix hosed down the elephants and fed tigers frozen fish snacks. Dogs were at risk of burning their paws on scorched pavement, and airlines kept close watch on the heat for fear that it could cause flights to be delayed.

Clinical! Mexico striker runs on and scores despite losing his boot

VIDEO: Striker scores despite losing his boot
Oops: Jesus Escoboza?s boot flies off as he goes to score (Picture: YouTube)

Mexico striker Jesus Escoboza has shown he?s a true predator in front of goal after running on and scoring against Mali at the Under-20 World Cup ? despite losing his boot.

Escoboza, of Santos Laguna FC, found the net along with Marco Bueno, Jesus Corona and Uvaldo Luna in a 4-1 thrashing of Mali that helped El Tri qualify for the knockout stages.

But he had to work a lot harder than most to find the net, after his football boot flew off in the build-up.

Finisher: Escoboza still goes on and finds the net (Picture: YouTube)

Escoboza had scampered onto a flicked header from team-mate Bueno down the left wing, but just as he appeared to have got away from the last defender to run on and score, his right boot slipped off and the forward was left to control with the ball with his sock.

It worked, though, and after showing some serious composure Escoboza kept going and eventually lashed the ball into the corner with his left peg.

Not bad, and further proof of Escoboza?s rising stock, with Inter Milan believed to be chasing his signature.

Weekly Ketchup: World War Z and This Is the End Getting Sequels?

This Week's Ketchup includes sequel news for Taken 3, the fifth Terminator, and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1; movies based on Captain Planet, Encyclopedia Brown, and Knight Rider; and new roles for Leonardo DiCaprio, Jamie Foxx, and (maybe) Vin Diesel.

This Week's Top Story

SEQUELS POSSIBLE FOR APOCALYPTIC HITS WORLD WAR Z AND THIS IS THE END

Destruction is a big thing this summer. Man of Steel is the most obvious, and where most of the press goes, but it's not the only movie to score well at the box office in June with calamitous events, and it's not the only such movie with sequel buzz either. After months of pre-release bad buzz about reshoots (and a six month release delay), World War Z opened this past weekend to $66 million in North America, and $111.8 million worldwide. Paramount Pictures is claiming it as "the best opening for an original live-action tentpole since Avatar," which is a bit weird because it was based on a bestselling novel. Anyway, there's been talk for a while of a possible World War Z trilogy, and those numbers were enough for Paramount and Brad Pitt's Plan B to officially start development on a sequel. All of this is arguably at least partly due to the surprisingly positive reviews for World War Z, and they were possibly due to the drastic changes to the film's plot. This link tells you about added scenes in the first hour of the film, and this detailed article describes the completely different third act. It also explains why that one guy looked like Matthew Fox. The quasi-reality-based apocalyptic comedy This is the End has also been quietly doing well (opening to over $20 million against Man of Steel), and Seth Rogen's codirector Evan Goldberg is already talking up his idea for what a sequel could be like, which sounds like it veers crazily off into movie-within-a-movie territory. Which is not to say that a sequel has actually been greenlit, of course (but it's at least being talked about).

Fresh Developments This Week

#1 DJANGO UNCHAINED STARS TO REUNITE FOR MEAN BUSINESS ON NORTH GANSON STREET

After playing opposing roles in Django Unchained, Jamie Foxx and Leonardo DiCaprio are now attached to costar in a new project for Warner Bros called Mean Business on North Ganson Street. The movie will be an adaptation of an upcoming crime novel by S. Craig Zahler about two disgraced and/or demoted detectives who are reassigned to a crime-riddled town in Missouri. The title of the movie bears some noting as Leonardo DiCaprio's next movie is called The Wolf of Wall Street, with director Martin Scorsese, who himself had early success with Mean Streets, which is one letter off from being the first and second word of this movie. When you add it all together, what you get is... yeah, it's a complete coincidence.

#2 JULIANNE MOORE MIGHT LEAD THE REBELLION IN THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY PART 1

We might still be almost five months away from the November 22, 2013 release of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, but that's probably not really a reason for Lionsgate not to proceed with plans for the final two movies adapting The Hunger Games: Mockingjay (ie, few people are really expecting the audience for the first movie to stop showing up for the three sequels). And so, we learned this week that negotiations have begun with Julianne Moore for her to play Alma Coin, who is an important figure in the growing rebellion against the evil President Donald Sutherland Coriolanus Snow. If she signs, Moore will appear in both parts of Mockingjay, which are scheduled for release on November 21, 2014 and November 20, 2015, respectively.

#3 VIN DIESEL HEADLINES THIS WEEK IN MARVEL NEWS... BUT WHY?

The biggest news this week involving Marvel Studios is that Vin Diesel revealed that he will be meeting soon with them. That, however, is basically where the story begins and ends. Why does Marvel want to talk to Vin Diesel? Is it for Thanos, the expected big bad in The Avengers 2, or perhaps for an entirely different superhero project? At one point years ago, his name came up concerning a possible Sub-Mariner movie, but as far as we know right now, Marvel's not actively pursuing that (though he could certainly appear in another character's film). This writer thinks it's probably Thanos, but for the most shallow of reasons (Vin Diesel's jawline sort of resembles the way Thanos is often drawn). In a similarly mysterious vein, we also learned this week that Australian actor Josh Helman has been cast for several weeks of work on X-Men: Days of Future Past, but that's again, about all we know. He might be playing any one of dozens of Marvel's mutants, or he might be playing "Sentinel Technician #2." You say you just absolutely love Marvel news stories with very few details to go on, and just two such stories aren't enough? Alright then: Also this week, Marvel announced another mystery movie for the release date of July 8, 2016. What movie that might be, in between mystery movies on May 6, 2016 and May 5, 2017, is anyone's guess. And finally, here's another release date which is only sort of Marvel-related. Focus Features and Universal Pictures have announced a release date of August 1, 2014 for their adaptation of the "Mommie Porn" novel Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L. James. And the reason that's relevant here? That's the same release date as Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy.

#5 WARNER BROS DEVELOPING LEGO SPINOFF NINJAGO

This past weekend saw the debut of the trailer for The LEGO Movie in theaters with Monsters University, preparing audiences for the film's release on February 7, 2014. Warner Bros is apparently happy with the big screen prospects for all things LEGO, as the studio has hired two of the writers of The LEGO Movie to work on an adaptation of the LEGO toy line Ninjago. As you can guess from the title, the Ninjago line revolves around ninjas and other types of warriors and monsters inspired by both Japanese and Chinese mythology. Ninjago was also the inspiration for the Cartoon Network animated series Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu which has aired on the network since January, 2011. Warner Bros is reportedly close to finding a director for Ninjago, who will be someone other than Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the directors of The LEGO Movie, who also directed Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs. With little more to base an opinion on, consider this Ninjago story a true borderline "???" this week.

Rotten Ideas of the Week

#5 ENCYCLOPEDIA BROWN AND THE CASE OF THE UNREQUESTED MOVIE DEVELOPMENT

It's been an ongoing theme in Hollywood since the 1990s that studios love going to the material of their own childhood for material for movies for tomorrow's kids. Listing all of the examples would take too much space, but since this entry is mostly about Warner Bros, let's use Yogi Bear and Where the Wild Things Are as examples (Garfield and The Smurfs are good examples at other studios). The latest example of this strategy is Encyclopedia Brown, the 28 volume series of boy detective books by Donald J. Sobol which were first published in 1963 (until his death in 2012). Warner Bros is now developing an Encyclopedia Brown movie, which is the latest effort in a franchise history of film attempts that goes back to the early 1980s and Chevy Chase. This story comes just two weeks after a similar announcement at 20th Century Fox for plans for the Choose Your Own Adventure franchise. Encyclopedia Brown is a borderline "Rotten Idea" just because as noted before, do kids today even know who he is?

#4 LIVE ACTION CAPTAIN PLANET BACK IN DEVELOPMENT AGAIN

My, how time flies when you're not really paying much attention. As this writer prepared to report this week on the idea of a live action Captain Planet movie, it was with some surprise that I realized that it was actually almost two years ago now that we last reported on it. Anyway, now it's Sony Pictures that is picking up the rights to a movie based upon the early 1990s kids cartoon Captain Planet and the Planeteers about a blue skinned superhero with green hair who fights crime... as long as it's environmental crime. Let that contradiction sink in a bit. Captain Planet was aided by five teenagers, four of whom wore rings representing the elements of Earth, Fire, Water, and Wind, and the fifth was stuck with... Heart. Don Cheadle has also starred in a series of Captain Planet short films for FunnyorDie. Attempts at a live action Captain Planet movie date back to the 1990s.

#3 PARAMOUNT ANNOUNCES NEW TERMINATOR TRILOGY (AND LEAVES SOMEONE OUT)

In advance, every upcoming year has lots of big movies tentatively scheduled, but 2015 is some sort of crazy special example. It might be easier to list franchises that don't have entries planned for 2015 than those that do. The list of possible/likely "big movies" for 2015 got even longer this week with the official announcement by Paramount Pictures of a June 26, 2015 release date for the next Terminator movie. What's especially curious about the news is that the film is being described as "the first in a stand-alone trilogy," and nowhere in the announcement is there any mention of Arnold Schwarzenegger starring in this new film, which will be the fifth entry in the franchise (#4 was 2009's Terminator: Salvation). This movie, whatever it ends up being called, has made the news in recent weeks amidst talk of both Schwarzenegger and Dwayne Johnson appearing in it, but officially, Paramount Pictures isn't mentioning any of that just yet. The 33% Rotten score on the RT Tomatometer for Terminator: Salvation is why this new movie is still a "Rotten Idea" until we hear reasons to think otherwise.

#2 LIAM NEESON TO RECEIVE NEARLY THE BUDGET OF TAKEN TO STAR IN TAKEN 3

This story is mostly about math and the Taken franchise, but let's start with the math. In 2008, Liam Neeson starred in a little movie called Taken, which had a reported budget of $25 million. The movie ended up bringing in over $226 million internationally, so yeah, to little surprise, there was a Taken 2. That movie was released in October, 2012, and for his particular set of skills, Liam Neeson earned $15 million of the film's $45 million budget that time around. The investment paid off even better for the sequel, which now has an international total of over $376 million. And so, once again, to little surprise, there will be a Taken 3. And that finally brings us to this week's actual news, which is that Liam Neeson's deal this time is in the $20 million range, or in other words, a number close to the entire budget for the first movie. Deals will now be sought for Famke Janssen and Maggie Grace, who play his wife and daughter, respectively. As for why this is one of the week's most Rotten Ideas, here's one last bit of math for you: 21% on the RT Tomatometer for Taken 2.

#1 KNIGHT RIDER: THE MOVIE FROM THE WRITER OF... WILD HOGS?

Not every movie based upon an old TV show is inherently a bad idea. We've actually gotten several pretty great movies from old TV shows (The Fugitive, The Untouchables, and the Mission: Impossible franchise, for some examples). Any movie needs the right parts, and in the case of this week's Most Rotten Idea, the part that really makes it rotten involves the 2007 "comedy" Wild Hogs, which has a Tomatometer score of just 14%. Screenwriter Brad Copeland wrote that movie, and now he's been hired by the Weinstein Co. to work on their adaptation of the hit 1980s TV science fiction-tinged adventure show Knight Rider. The motivation behind a Knight Rider movie seems mostly to be based on the success of the Fast and the Furious franchise, but those cars also don't talk, or require someone to write lines for them to deliver. And that brings us back to Wild Hogs.

Apple's chip deal with TSMC could hasten messy Samsung divorce

Apple has signed an agreement with Taiwanese semiconductor company TSMC to build mobile processors for its iOS devices, the Wall Street Journal has reported.

The rival chip-maker will eventually take over from Samsung as Apple's key supplier, eventually phasing out a business relationship destroyed by endless patent infringement lawsuits between the two.

The report claimed TSMC will begin building chips in 2014, although Samsung will continue to be the primary supplier for that year and perhaps beyond.

Apple and TSMC had been in talks since 2010, the report said, but were finally able to agree a deal after the latter resolved "glitches preventing the chips from meeting Apple's speed and power standards."

End of an era?

The procurement of a new chip supplier could be the final piece in the puzzle for Apple as it seeks to lessen its reliance on Samsung as a component manufacturer.

It no longer buys the displays for iOS devices from Samsung and has been spreading the wealth by finding other firms to manufacturer RAM and flash memory for iPhones and iPads.

Apple and Samsung had done great business together for many years before Samsung emerged as a genuine contender to the iPhones dominance with its Galaxy smartphone range.

Apple strongly alleged that Samsung got its leg-up by "blatantly copying" its own devices, leading to countless suits and counter suits around the world.

Although they make plenty of money together, it seems neither is too keen on lining the other's pockets regardless of how mutual beneficial the business relationship has been.

Public transit agencies deride 'patent trolls' | Wisconsin Law Journal ...

By JASON KEYSER
?Associated Press

CHICAGO (AP) ? Public transit agencies nationwide are being targeted with questionable lawsuits by so-called patent trolls squeezing settlements out of financially strapped public entities unable to mount legal defenses against claims they are infringing on intellectual property protections, industry representatives said Thursday.

Lawsuits or threats of legal action have been lodged against at least 23 transit providers in some of the nation?s largest cities, including New York, Boston and Chicago. Opponents say the claims are frivolous and are stifling innovation, draining resources and costing taxpayers millions.

?We are seeing this huge onslaught of patent lawsuits,? said James LaRusch, chief counsel for the nonprofit American Public Transportation Association, which has filed a federal lawsuit seeking to protect its hundreds of member agencies.

Critics of the practice deride the firms as ?patent trolls? because they appear to do little genuine business or technology development beyond buying up patents and using them to demand licensing fees from other companies.

Known in technical jargon as patent assertion entities, they have also gone after private sector companies but are increasingly targeting public and governmental agencies, including utilities, cities, the U.S. Postal Service and now transit providers. The resulting settlements are draining already depleted public coffers.

That shift is alarming some in Congress, where several pending bills could help limit the damage from frivolous claims. The head of the Federal Trade Commission is seeking an investigation of such firms and their business practices.

?This type of litigation undercuts the purpose of the patent system and exploits the fact that public agencies are at a disadvantage in defending themselves,? said U.S. Rep. Daniel Lipinski of Illinois, the state?s senior member on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.

The Chicago-area Democrat wrote to FTC Chairwoman Edith Ramirez this week to urge her to follow through with an investigation that would determine the scope of such activity and identify which companies are the most prolific filers of such legal claims.

The claims against transit companies have largely challenged the use of GPS-based tracking systems that alert customers to bus and train arrival times at stations and online.

The transit industry association is challenging the validity of the patents cited in the claims, but says many agencies have no choice but to settle to avoid litigation costs that can reach $2 million to $3 million even if they?re successful.

The names of only two companies filing claims have become public, but LaRusch believes there are many others ? and many out-of-court settlements ? that do not become known publicly because of confidentiality clauses in the deals.

The lawsuit his group filed Tuesday in federal court in Manhattan identifies the two companies as ArrivalStar S.A. in Luxembourg and its affiliate Melvino Technologies Ltd., an offshore firm in the British Virgin Islands.

Dowell Baker, a Lafayette, Ind., law firm that represents the two companies did not respond to a phone message seeking comment Thursday.

One of the law firm?s claim letters, sent to the Toledo Area Regional Transit Authority in February 2012, says it represents a founder of ArrivalStar who invented tracking technology used in public transportation and shipment of cargo and packages.

?ArrivalStar has licensed its technology to over 180 companies,? the claim letter says. ?Although many of these licenses were granted in settlement of patent infringement actions filed by ArrivalStar, many resulted from amicable business negotiations.?

LaRusch, of the American Public Transportation Association, disputed the assertion that the companies have developed any technology.

?They don?t develop anything. They don?t produce anything. Their reason for being appears to be simply to file claims against people who go out and create things,? he said.

More evidence for Jewish Jerusalem | Reporting on the Middle East ...

Print Edition

Photo by: Courtesy of Vladimir Niihin

By DANIEL K. EISENBUD
27/06/2013, Jerusalem Post

Cistern found near Robinson?s Arch contained an unprecedented discovery ? three intact cooking pots and a small ceramic oil lamp.

For the first time Thursday, the Israel Antiquities Authority unearthed a small 2,000-year-old cistern near the Western Wall that connects an archaeological find with the famine that occurred during the Roman siege of Jerusalem during The Great Revolt.
The cistern, found near Robinson?s Arch ? in a drainage channel that was exposed from the Shiloah Pool in the City of David ? contained three intact cooking pots and a small ceramic oil lamp.
According to Eli Shukron, excavation director for the IAA, the discovery is unprecedented.
?The complete cooking pots and ceramic oil lamp indicate that the people went down into the cistern where they secretly ate the food that was contained in the pots, without anyone seeing them,? said Shukron. ?This is consistent with the account provided by Josephus.?
Indeed, in his book The Jewish War, Josephus (also known as Joseph ben Matityahu), a Jewish scholar who witnessed and described the Roman siege of Jerusalem, detailed the resulting hunger that ensued.
In his account, Josephus wrote of Jewish rebels who sought food in the homes of other starving Jews confined to the city. Fearing these rebels would steal their food, many Jews used cisterns, similar to the one found Thursday, to conceal their meager provisions, and later ate in hidden places within their homes.
?As the famine grew worse, the frenzy of the partisans increased with it?? Josephus wrote in The Jewish War. ?For as nowhere was there corn to be seen, men broke into the houses and ransacked them.?
He continued, ?If they found some they maltreated the occupants for saying there was none; if they did not, they suspected them of having hidden it more carefully and tortured them.?
Josephus recounted that many Jews suffering from starvation would barter their possessions for small quantities of food to stay alive.

?Many secretly exchanged their possessions for one measure of corn-wheat if they happened to be rich; barley if they were poor,? he wrote. ?They shut themselves up in the darkest corners of the their houses, where some through extreme hunger ate their grain as it was, others made bread, necessity and fear being their only guides. Nowhere was a table laid??
The artifacts will be on display during a July 4 conference on the City of David, organized by the Megalim Institute.? For more details about the conference visit the institute?s website at www.cityofdavid.org.il.
Earlier in the week, the IAA also unearthed a well-preserved section of an 1,800-year-old road in Beit Hanina, leading from Jerusalem to Jaffa, during a routine excavation prior to the installation of a drainage pipe in the northern Jerusalem neighborhood.

The Newcomer's Guide To Efficient Internet Promotion - Maynas Eric

It is no secret that there is a lot of hard work involved in Website marketing. Hard work and persistence can help your Internet promotion plan improve your bottom line. It does no good to work very hard at pointless tasks. The tips listed here will get you going in the right direction.

A client mailing list is vital. Post notification on your website to collect emails. However, if you want to be slightly more aggressive, request it in order for customers to purchase items off your site. Either way, you can use this information later to send out sales information, offer promotional materials or to ask for customer feedback.

You need to create a great site before worrying about getting it ranked. Building a great website should be your very first step in starting a web business. Once your website operates without glitches and looks great, you are ready to move forward with marketing.

TIP! To increase your ad clicks, place an image on your page that, when clicked, leads to a page that describes the item you are advertising or selling. Ensure you use the font that you use in your articles and linking it.

Split your website into sections, and have a map from which people can choose the products they?d like to see. While variety is desirable, ensure that your options are presented in an organized way.

Try putting a blog on your site and updating it regularly. Frequent blogging is a great way of keeping your potential customers informed and up to date about your business. Having a blog also makes your site larger, which gives search engines more material to index and should thus bring you more traffic.

You have everything you need to be successful with internet marketing. Fancy computer programs and overpriced get-rich-quick schemes can?t compare to a person with knowledge and the desire to get the job done. Just work hard and imagine what you can achieve when you are marketing yourself.

TIP! Use social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook as a part of your Internet marketing campaign. You can use these sites to advertise new offers or to share your latest articles.

To build a good website, be as content-focused and as comprehensive as you can. Your main goal should be to teach the viewer about your product in a timely manner. Repetitive descriptions and data, facts and information that the customer will find irrelevant or even boring, should be avoided.

Video marketing is an awesome way to generate interest in your business. Incorporating an informative video onto your website is a great method for gaining the attention of your viewers. Sharing these videos should be easy thanks to social networks and blogs.

To become a successful internet marketer, you need dedication and a high work ethic rather than luck. There is no such story about a business that just got lucky in their success. Coca Cola?s success isn?t pure luck, but rather years of research and work that culminated in a wildly successful soft drink. Not at all. They did a superb job of marketing their product.

TIP! A ?squeeze page? can be an effective way to gather contact info for your mailing list. This will encourage visitors to enter their email addresses.

The majority of cellular providers permit multiple numbers to be routed to a single phone. Therefore, it is wise to get a dedicated number.

To bolster the credibility of your web business, you should try to land interviews with authorities within your niche who are well respected. The interviews can be done on video, audio, or in text form. Your interview will boost readership of your website, improve your reputation as someone in the know and give you more incoming traffic.

You should approach banner advertising differently, and go for a unique approach when designing one for your website. The more appealing and original your banner ad appears, the more people you?ll have clicking on it.

TIP! Check out what your competition is up to. You can check your competition?s site to see what they have.

Consider creating a web page for comments and customer reviews of your products and services. Customer reviews can help establish loyalty and will increase your reputation in the industry.

Add the word ?fast? in you advertisement campaigns and add language that would strengthen your products. Customers value speedy service, which is why you want to ensure that your products are delivered quickly.

TIP! If you website is static and rarely ever changes, perhaps you should consider including a blog on your site. New content gets the attention of the search engines which will increase your ranking in their listings and lead to more traffic for your site.

Offering free gifts or promotions will make your customers feel valued. Sometimes, it is easy to overlook simple things such as this, but offering freebies can keep customers coming back.

Customers will order their products faster if you give them incentives to do so. This could include free shipping, faster shipping or free gift wrapping. One way to do this is to offer free shipping to the first 100 customers who purchase a specified item. Offering incentives can encourage more people to purchase your product and promote customer satisfaction.

Are you searching for some way to do online marketing? Encourage people to give you their email address or to connect with you on social networks by advertising special offers regularly. Offer freebies or contests and ask them if you can send them future emails. A customer will provide their email if they get something in return for it.

TIP! Internet marketing ventures will not succeed through chance, only through deliberate effort and hard work can you hope to enjoy success. No one ever got rich in their own business from luck.

Employ a lot of descriptions on the site. Adjectives work very well in the world of web marketing. Be creative, and come up with your own words and site- or product-specific jargon. Make them want to revisit your site just to read what you have to say.

Telomere length influences cancer cell differentiation

June 27, 2013 ? Researchers from the Japanese Foundation for Cancer Research in Tokyo have discovered that forced elongation of telomeres (extensions on the end of chromosomes) promotes the differentiation of cancer cells, probably reducing malignancy, which is strongly associated with a loss of cell differentiation. They report their findings in a manuscript published online ahead of print, in the journal Molecular and Cellular Biology.

"Cancer cells may maintain short telomeres to maintain their undifferentiated state," says Hiroyuki Seimiya, a researcher on the study.

Telomeres are protective extensions on the ends of chromosomes, which shorten as cells age, like an hourglass running down. They protect the end of the chromosome from deterioration or from fusion with neighboring chromosomes.Without telomeres chromosomes would progressively lose genetic information as cells divide and replicate.

Cancer cells have shorter telomeres compared to healthy cells, but they guard their immortality by maintaining these telomeres' length.

In the study, the forced elongation of cancer cells' telomeres suppressed a number of genes and proteins that appear to be involved in tumor malignancy, according to the report. For example, one of these factors, N-cadherin, is involved in prostate cancer metastasis.

Based on their results, the investigators now propose that telomeres also modulate the behavior of cells by controlling gene expression, by as yet unknown mechanisms, says Seimiya. His research, he says, may ultimately lead to new types of treatments for cancer.

Oh Great, Wi-Fi Networks Can Be Used to See Through Walls Now

And here we thought the only privacy risk with having a Wi-Fi network at home was someone figuring out our password. Researchers at MIT felt that a stranger having access to your wireless network wasn't scary enough, so they developed a way for someone to use Wi-Fi signals as a sort of x-ray vision to track a person's movements in another room.

Swell Launches A Personalized App For News Radio Listening

Swell_iPhone_pairSwell, a new app launching today, is quickly becoming my favorite way to listen to spoken-word content. There are other apps focusing on that kind of content ? for example, when we wrote about Stitcher's growth last year, we said it was starting to sound like "the Pandora of talk radio." Stitcher, however, actually follows more of an on-demand model ? you choose what you want to listen to (although there are also content recommendations). Swell, on the other hand, is closer to the Pandora experience, where you just open the app, hit play, and interesting content should immediately start streaming.

Jarrett, Braxton among 2014 NEA Jazz Masters

NEW YORK (AP) ? Pianist Keith Jarrett says "only music excites me, and awards and ceremonies do not." But the pianist says he feels honored to receive the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters Award, joining many past recipients who've influenced him.

The NEA announced Thursday that its 2014 Jazz Masters ? the nation's highest jazz honor ? also include avant-garde saxophonist-composer Anthony Braxton, bassist-educator Richard Davis, and educator Jamey Aebersold.

Jarrett was cited by the NEA for his work in both the jazz and classical fields. His latest release, "Somewhere," marks the 30th anniversary of his trio with bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Jack DeJohnette. His recording of J.S. Bach's "Six Sonatas for Violin and Keyboard" with violinist Michelle Makarski is due out in September.

98% Before Midnight

All Critics (146) | Top Critics (38) | Fresh (142) | Rotten (3)

Hawke and Delpy remain as charming as ever, and their combined goofiness is more endearing than annoying.

Love is messy here, life cannot be controlled, satisfaction is far from guaranteed. Romance is rocky at best. But romance still is.

Though "Before Midnight" is often uncomfortable to watch, it's never less than mesmerizing - and ultimately, a joy to walk with this prickly but fascinating couple again.

"Before Midnight" is heartbreaking, but not because of Jesse and Celine. It's the filmmakers' passions that seem to have cooled.

Before Midnight is fascinating to watch, and so long as Celine and Jesse are communicating, there's still hope.

How (Jesse and Celine) try to rekindle that flame is what drives Midnight, a film that feels so authentic it's like overhearing a conversation you're not sure you should be hearing.

Loving words mix with personal attacks, the magic moments with the unintended slights, as we witness the occasional desperation of imperfect people doing the best they can when life moves beyond meet-cute and courtship. That's authentic.

Linklater and his players bring an end to the fantasy and welcome the thrilling ups and bitter downs of reality to this love story.

Like the first two films, it reflects the real world in a way that seems almost preternatural. It's just that, here, the real world is a harsher, more disappointing place.

The duo, clearly so comfortable in their characters' skin, indulge in intelligent banter, sharp humour and emotional truths.

So much better written than contemporary novels, this film is a literary as well as cinematic achievement to cherish. For grown-ups.

As before, it's often very funny, with Jesse and Celine swapping Woody Allen-esque one-liners - nicely snarky, appealingly abrasive.

The acting, the dialogue and direction are superb.

None of the films is faultless in itself, but, tinted with complementary tones, the complete cycle comes as close to perfection as any trilogy in cinema history.

Marvelous. It's impossible to shake the feeling that we are merely eavesdropping on reality. Witty, wise, and -- most important of all -- truly romantic in ways that movies usually aren't.

It's been 18 years since Hawke, Delpy and Linklater introduced us to Jesse and Celine, and their story just gets richer, funnier and more punchy each time we see them. In 1995's Before Sunrise, they were idealistic 23-year-olds.

Hawke and Delpy are as believably real as any screen couple can ever be.

This is one of the few sequels for which the cliche 'eagerly awaited' is truly applicable.

Predictably, it's just as great as the first two.

By the end, Before Midnight inches towards a dawn of charm. But it's a troubled trip.

As an organic experiment in collaboration between actors and director, it is a triumph, co-created and co-owned by Delpy, Linklater and Hawke.

Hawke and Delpy, who are both credited on the script too, have never found co-stars to bounce off more nimbly or bring out richer nuances in their acting.

The performances and dialogue are wonderfully naturalistic; a reminder that the best special effects are often the cheapest.

Before Midnight is about the nature of long-term relationships, and the way love deepens and grows but also finds itself subject to the complications of maturity. Smart, insightful, and poignant.

For those who witnessed Jesse and Celine's tentative getting together as inter railing students almost twenty years ago, it's reassuring to see them still in love.

Brilliantly directed, superbly written and impeccably acted, this is a thoroughly enjoyable, thought-provoking and emotionally engaging drama that perfectly complements the previous two films.

Legal How-To: Subletting Your Apartment - Law and Daily Life

As you take off for a long-awaited summer vacation, you may want to know how to sublet your apartment.

Renting out your place is a great way to shoulder costs and, in some cases, meet new folks. But the subletting process can be daunting -- and in some jurisdictions, it may even be unlawful, depending on the circumstances.

Thankfully, there are certain steps you can take for a smooth(er) subletting process. Here are five steps you'll want to consider:

  1. Make sure it's legal to sublet. Before all else, make sure short-term leases are legal in your area. In New York City, for example, it's illegal to rent out a single-family home, apartment, or room for less than 30 days if you aren't living there. Other cities and states have similar restrictions. Violating such laws may result in hefty fines, so be sure to check your local laws before you list your casa on Craigslist or Airbnb.
  2. Ask your landlord for permission. Micro-sublets can potentially jeopardize your lease. That's because most rental agreements include a clause that limits your ability to sublet or have guests stay for long periods of time without your landlord's approval. So check your lease and get written consent from your landlord saying it's OK to sublet your apartment.
  3. Find a trustworthy tenant. At the end of the day, the subtenant isn't responsible to your landlord. You still are. So choose your subtenant wisely! You'll be liable for any nonsense that goes on while you're gone. You may want try to look for a subtenant through reliable friends and/or family. If you plan on using Craigslist or Airbnb, try to interview potential candidates -- perhaps via a service like Skype for out-of-towners -- and consider getting references. It might not hurt to take a peek at his or her Facebook profile, either.
  4. Put your sublease agreement in writing. The sublease agreement is between you (the original tenant) and the subtenant. The subtenant pays you rent and is covered by the same lease terms you agreed to. As for the exact wording of these agreements, your local library will likely carry titles that include examples of subleases; you can also find a variety of sublease agreement templates for purchase online that are tailored to your state.
  5. Get a security deposit. When you're making sublet agreements, especially for short-term leases, there's a very real possibility that potential subtenants will flake on you. Sometimes the ol' virtual handshake isn't enough -- even after you become Facebook friends. To make sure your subletters keep their word, seal the deal by requiring a security deposit. It's also a good way to ensure the subtenants stay on their best behavior. It'll help cover any maintenance or repairs that need to be performed while you're subletting.

Need more help?

Subletting your apartment has a certain legal art to it. Because of the legal implications involved, you'll want to be very careful in how you word your sublease agreement. That's where an experienced landlord-tenant attorney can come in handy.

If you're using a template for your agreement, another option is to sign up for a prepaid legal plan. Some plans, like those offered by LegalStreet, include attorney contract reviews (up to 10 pages) at no extra charge. LegalStreet plans also include unlimited phone consultations with licensed lawyers in your area, in case you have questions about your sublease, or any other legal issue that may arise.

(Disclosure: LegalStreet and FindLaw.com are owned by the same company. FindLaw.com also has a business relationship with U.S. Legal Forms, which offers template legal forms for purchase.)

EU leaders win breakthrough on budget deal

The new, unanimous, multi-year European Union budget, which includes the first cuts to EU spending in its history, determines what the bloc can spend on common infrastructure like railway or road projects, farming subsidies, and aid to poor countries.?

European Union leaders reached an outline deal Friday on the 27-country bloc's 960 billion euro ($1.3 trillion) seven-year budget, overcoming a British-French dispute to sign off on the agreement.

British Prime Minister David Cameron had held out for the same financial conditions already promised him months ago, overshadowing a summit meant to focus on the continent's youth unemployment problems.

However, in the end, all 27 nations backed the budget deal. EU President Herman Van Rompuy said "it is a quite clear 'yes'," when it came to unanimous backing of the 2014-2020 spending plan.

Beyond the seven-year spending plan, which still needs full parliamentary approval, the EU nations also agreed on the shape of future bank bailouts, injecting a sense of fresh credibility into the efforts of the leaders to control the region's economic problems.

But the budget deal also highlighted deep divisions among European countries over whether to spend or cut their way out of crisis. The UK is seeking reassurances that it won't have to contribute too much at a time of belt-squeezing across the continent.

The multi-annual budget, which includes the first cut to EU spending in its history, determines what the bloc can spend on common infrastructure like railway or road projects, farming subsidies and aid to poor countries. It's separate from national budgets ? and much smaller ? but a source of difficult and passionate debate.

The decision came after some protracted brinkmanship following the British objections to an outline reached early Thursday. Cameron surprised many by insisting that the EU stick to parts of an earlier agreement reached in February.

Due to a provision on agricultural funding, the country could have lost some of its previously negotiated repayment from the budget, costing it about an annual 200 to 300 million euros, a diplomat from a major EU country said.

The issue left London up against Paris, which would have to pay for the bulk of the shortfall otherwise, the diplomat said. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't allowed to discuss the closed-door talks publicly.

In the end, Van Rompuy said the British concerns were taken on board, since "actually nothing has changed" on the question of Britain's contribution since the February agreement.

French President Francois Hollande said he signed off on the deal and praised the European Parliament for winning more wiggle room on the budget.

The summit was initially meant to focus on finding ways to get more young people employed, and calmly taking stock of EU efforts to stabilize the world's biggest economic bloc now that its deep debt troubles have subsided.

Crucially, the EU budget also includes money for the employment measures that the bloc's leaders addressed at the two-day summit which finishes Friday afternoon. No budget agreement would mean no money for those projects.

Unemployment is at a record high of 11 percent for the EU and 12.2 percent for the 17 member countries that use the euro. It is far worse for the young: Latest figures show almost one in four people aged under 25 in the EU are unemployed. In Greece and Spain, that rate has it hit more than 50 percent.

After the late-night meetings, Hollande said that 6 billion euros for youth jobs will be speeded up and spent over 2014-2015 instead of over 7 years.

In addition he said that there will be two to three times that amount in "European credits" for employment schemes.

Germany argues that governments should focus on reforms instead of new funding, to get growth going again and create more jobs.

Thursday's deal on the budget came hours after EU finance ministers reached a landmark deal determining that banks' shareholders, creditors and holders of large deposits will have to bear the brunt of future bank failures, so that taxpayers don't have to.

The joint rules on how to restructure or wind down banks are a key step toward establishing a so-called banking union for Europe, aimed at restoring stability after a tumultuous few years that have dragged down the global economy.

Angela Charlton and Sylvain Plazy in Brussels and Geir Moulson in Berlin contributed to this report.

New red blood cell simulator invented

June 27, 2013 ? Engineers from Queen Mary, University of London have developed the world's most precise computer simulation of how red blood cells might travel around the body to help doctors treat people with serious circulatory problems.

Red blood cells have the important task of carrying oxygen around the body but make up less than half of the total blood volume -- 45 per cent in men and 40 per cent in women.

Understanding how damaged red blood cells might interact with each other or their neighbouring cells could be useful in realising blood flow in patients who are diabetic or have had surgery to address circulation complications, such as stents or artificial hearts.

The simulations, the largest of their kind, take into account the many forces acting on red blood cells as they travel through the blood vessels, which affect how the cells interact and stick to each other. The data gathered for the various flow situations in the simulation match the data gathered from experiments very closely.

John Williams, Professor of Computational Fluid Dynamics at the School of Engineering and Materials Science, said: "At the moment it's difficult to visualise how red blood cells travel through the body as they are very small and hard to track through enclosed vessels such as arteries and the heart. Our research will help medical professionals to visualise the cells movement, interaction, deformation and adhesion in three dimensions.

"This could help doctors in understanding which areas of the body are being starved of oxygen in patients who have had heart surgery, for example."

Professor Williams added: "Because of the enormous number of cells involved, we need vast supercomputer resources now in order to carry out a simulation of the flow of both damaged and undamaged red blood cells through a stent to study the effects on the cells."

The research is published in the Journal of Biomechanics.

NYC Council passes plans for new police oversight

NEW YORK (AP) ? The most expansive plans in years to impose new oversight on the New York Police Department passed the City Council early Thursday, as lawmakers voted to create an outside watchdog and make it easier to bring racial profiling claims against the nation's largest police force.

Both passed with enough votes to override expected vetoes, marking an inflection point in the public debate and power dynamics that have set the balance between prioritizing safety and protecting civil liberties here.

Proponents see the legislation as a check on a police department that has come under scrutiny for its heavy use of a tactic known as stop and frisk and its extensive surveillance of Muslims, as disclosed in a series of stories by The Associated Press.

"New Yorkers know that we can keep our city safe from crime and terrorism without profiling our neighbors," Councilman Brad Lander, who spearheaded the measures with Councilman Jumaane Williams, said at a packed and emotional City Council meeting that began shortly before midnight and stretched into the early morning. In a sign of the national profile the measures has gained, NAACP President Benjamin Jealous was in the audience, while hip hop impresario Russell Simmons tweeted to urge the measures' passage.

Critics say the measures would impinge on techniques that have wrestled crime down dramatically and would leave the NYPD "pointlessly hampered by outside intrusion and recklessly threatened by second-guessing from the courts," in Mayor Michael Bloomberg's words. He vowed in a statement minutes after the vote to veto the measures and continue urging lawmakers to take his side.

But while it's too soon to settle how the initiatives may play out in practice if they survive the expected veto, they already have shaped politics and perception.

Besides giving ground to complaints that the NYPD hasn't been sensitive enough to civil rights and racial fairness, the legislation has put the three-term mayor and his popular police commissioner, Raymond Kelly, in the uncommon position of possibly losing a high-profile fight on public safety. They have gone to lengths to make their criticisms heard, most recently in a Monday news conference at which Bloomberg envisioned gang members lodging discriminatory-policing complaints and Kelly invoked "al-Qaeda wannabes."

Yet on Wednesday, council members rebuffed those concerns and approved the measures by a wide margin.

"It just became so polarized," said Eugene O'Donnell, a John Jay College of Criminal Justice professor who follows issues related to the NYPD. "(The mayor and commissioner) just dug in their heels, for whatever reason, and they ended up with the City Council coalescing around a pretty dramatic set of steps."

The measures follow on decades of efforts to empower outside input on the NYPD, or at least facets of it. Then-Mayor John Lindsay's efforts to establish an independent civilian complaint board in the 1960s spurred a bitter clash with a police union, which said the panel would hinder policing and mobilized a referendum on it. Voters defeated it.

More than two decades later, private citizens were appointed to the Civilian Complaint Review Board, which handles mainly misconduct claims against individual officers. A 1990s police corruption scandal spurred a recommendation for an independent board to investigate corruption; a Commission to Combat Police Corruption was established in 1995, but it lacks subpoena power.

Courts also have exercised some oversight, including through a 1985 federal court settlement that set guidelines for the NYPD's intelligence-gathering. And the City Council has weighed in before, including with a 2004 law that barred racial or religious profiling as "the determinative factor" in police actions, a measure Bloomberg signed.

The new measures are further-reaching than any of that, proponents and critics agree.

One would establish an inspector general with subpoena power to explore and recommend, but not force, changes to the NYPD's policies and practices. Various law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and the Los Angeles Police Department, have inspectors general.

The other would give people more latitude if they felt they were stopped because of bias based on race, sexual orientation or certain other factors.

Plaintiffs wouldn't necessarily have to prove that a police officer intended to discriminate. Instead, they could offer evidence that a practice such as stop and frisk affects some groups disproportionately, though police could counter that the disparity was justified to accomplish a substantial law enforcement end. The suits couldn't seek money, just court orders to change police practices.

The proposals were impelled partly by concern about the roughly 5 million stop and frisks the NYPD has conducted in the last decade, with more than 80 percent of those stopped being black or Hispanic and arrests resulting less than 15 percent of the time. But proponents also point to the department's spying on Muslims, which has included infiltrating Muslim student groups and putting informants in mosques, as the AP series showed.

The poor, mostly Muslim members of a South Asian advocacy group called Desis Rising Up and Moving "feel the impact of both issues ? surveillance, as Muslims ? and stop and frisk," which is prevalent in a Queens neighborhood where many members live, said Fahd Ahmed, the group's legal director.

Stop and frisk is already the subject of a federal lawsuit brought by four men who claim they were stopped solely because of their race, along with hundreds of thousands of others stopped in the last decade. A judge is considering whether to order reforms to the police policy. City attorneys argued the stops were lawful and not based on race alone.

"(The legislation) can have a tangible effect by virtue of the policy work that will come out of an inspector general's office and by virtue of the accountability that will come out of the profiling bill," said proponent Donna Lieberman, the executive director of the New York Civil Liberties Union. "But, also, they will be a statement to the people of New York that we care about fair and just policing."

The NYPD has defended the surveillance and stop and frisks as legal, and critics of the new legislation point to another set of statistics: Killings and other serious offenses have fallen 34 percent since 2001, while the number of city residents in jails and prisons has fallen 31 percent.

"These dangerous pieces of legislation will only hurt our police officers' ability to protect New Yorkers and sustain this tremendous record of accomplishment," Bloomberg said in his statement Thursday.

They could tie the department up in lawsuits and complaints, inject courts and an inspector general into tactical decisions and make "proactive policing by police officers extinct in our city," he said.

If the measures ultimately survive, Bloomberg won't be in City Hall to see much of the outcome. The term-limited mayor leaves office this year.

Democratic mayoral candidates have generally said the practice needs changing. Some Republicans, meanwhile, have embraced the NYPD's view.
