Christian HS Football Coach Reportedly Fired for Refusing to Attend a Church the School Required

In some high schools, football is a religion.

But for one very successful head coach, practicing that religion exceedingly well wasn?t good enough apparently.

You see, Scott Phillips, who led East Memorial Christian Academy?s football program to its first state playoff berth in years, got fired because of practicing actual religion.

Christian HS Football Coach Scott Phillips Reportedly Fired for Refusing to Attend a Church the School Required

Scott Phillips with his wife, Teri (Credit: Facebook)

He allegedly refused to attend a church of the Prattville, Ala. school?s liking?East Memorial Baptist Church?in favor of his family?s home church, and that spelled his end, according to Yahoo Sports and first reported in the Montgomery Advertiser.

Here?s more from Yahoo Sports:

While Phillips had never been forced to attend the school?s affiliated church when he was only a coach, that changed when he became the school?s athletic director. As confirmed by the Advertiser, East Memorial Christian Academy?s athletic director was expected to attend the East Memorial Baptist Church, even though?there was allegedly not an official clause in the contract requiring such attendance.

Phillips tried to make that work, getting his family to start each Sunday at a 9 a.m. service at East Memorial before attending an 11 a.m. service at his family?s church of choice, Church of the Highlands. Eventually that routine began to make Phillips feel dishonest, leading to a conversation with East Memorial officials where?the coach and AD told them he didn?t feel comfortable attending Sunday services at East Memorial Baptist.

That was the last conversation he would have as the school?s AD.

?I was 30 seconds from turning the job down because of the church issue,? Phillips told the Advertiser. ?They wanted me to transition from the Church of the Highlands to East Memorial. I never really liked that, so I went back in my administrator?s office and told them I was willing to give this a try, but I don?t know how this will work out?

?That was the last thing said.?

FORT WAYNE, Indiana ? Handbag and luggage maker Vera Bradley Inc. plans to expand its design and distribution centers near Fort Wayne and plans to add up to 128 new jobs over the next four years.

The company announced Friday it plans to invest about $26.6 million to expand both its 40,000 square-foot design center by 149,000 square feet and its 420,000 square foot distribution center in Roanoke, 14 miles southwest of Fort Wayne, by 10,000 square feet.

The Journal Gazette reports the Indiana Economic Development Corp. has offered the company up to $1.75 million in conditional tax credits. The tax credits are performance-based, meaning the company is not eligible to claim incentives until people are hired.

The company announced a $22.5 million expansion for its distribution center two years ago, adding 124 jobs.

'Love Potion No. 9' singer sues over Clovers' name

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Harold Winley sang "Love Potion No. 9" and other hits with the R&B group The Clovers in the 1950s, but now the 80-year-old says another group is trying to keep him from performing using the band's name.

Winley says he was in his teens when he and four other singers started performing as The Clovers in the Washington area. The R&B group played at New York's Apollo Theater, eventually signed with Atlantic Records and celebrated when "Love Potion No. 9" became their biggest hit in 1959.

"It was great," said Winley, who now lives in Lauderdale Lakes, Fla. "We didn't make no money but we had a lot of fun."

The group's success fell off in the 1960s, however. And that's when things got more complicated, leading to a lawsuit filed earlier this year in federal court in Washington.

Winley and another band mate, Harold Lucas, went on to perform with separate musical groups that called themselves The Clovers, and Harold Lucas' group eventually trademarked the name in the 1980s. Lucas died in 1994, but two of the men he trademarked the group's name with continue to use it when performing.

Winley says the group has threatened venues who have booked him when he's used The Clovers' name, forcing organizers to cancel his shows at least twice. That's why he filed his lawsuit.

"It is our position that when people come to see The Clovers they expect that they are going to see Harold Winley or another original member of The Clovers," said Winley's lawyer, Brad Newberg.

Winley says his bass voice is still strong and he'd like to perform as much as possible. But if he goes on stage, he said, "I want to go on stage as The Clovers." He recently tried filing a trademark application for "The Original Clovers featuring Harold Winley" but was denied.

A lawyer representing the two men who hold The Clovers trademark did not return several telephone calls and an e-mail requesting comment. The attorney previously filed a court document asking that the lawsuit be dismissed.

The song "Love Potion No. 9" was written and composed by Mike Stoller and Jerry Leiber, the duo behind many of Elvis Presley's biggest hits. The lighthearted song is about a man looking for love who visits a gypsy, who says "what you need is Love Potion Number Nine." He starts "kissing everything in sight" until he kisses a police officer, who the singer explains "broke my little bottle of Love Potion Number Nine."

After The Clovers' version rocketed up the charts in 1959, the song was covered by various groups and singers, most notably England's The Searchers, who had a hit version of it a few years later. The Clovers' version was later featured in George Lucas' iconic 1973 film "American Graffiti." It was later the title of a 1992 Sandra Bullock romantic comedy.

Charles Stevens, one of the group members from Lucas' Clovers, called the lawsuit "frivolous." Stevens, who lives in Washington, said Winley is not an "original Clover" because he didn't start with the group until the late 1940s. Lucas and three others were performing as the Four Clovers before Winley joined.

"All of a sudden he wants to come back and be The Clovers again," Stevens said, adding that his group has had the trademark for decades and now performs two or three times a year.

He says he doesn't mind if Winley uses the name "The Clovers," but he has a problem with the word "original." Stevens says his group had a former agent who may have called venues that booked Winley, but Stevens says he never personally blocked Winley from booking shows.

Both sides have agreed to mediation and will meet Monday to see if they can work things out.

Said Stevens: "We really do want to get this behind us."

Longtime NBC news correspondent John Palmer dies

WASHINGTON (AP) ? John Palmer, a veteran reporter for NBC News who covered wars and Washington over a career that spanned 40 years, died Saturday after a brief illness at a Washington hospital.

Palmer's wife Nancy confirmed he died at George Washington University Hospital of pulmonary fibrosis. He was 77.

The gentlemanly Palmer worked for NBC from 1962 to 1990, and then returned to the network from 1994 until 2002.

"John was a brilliant, brave, and tireless journalist who guided viewers through many of the most significant events of the past half-century - from the early days of the civil rights movement through the tragedy of 9/11," NBC News said in a statement. "He covered five presidents and traveled to every corner of the world, always showing the empathy and compassion that helped set him apart. His kindness is remembered by all of us, and it built lasting bonds throughout our news division. "

He served as a correspondent in Chicago, Paris and Beirut, as well as at the White House. In 1980 he landed one of his biggest scoops, breaking the news of the Carter administration's failed attempt to rescue the American hostages being held in Iran. His reporting on the story brought him the Merriman Smith Memorial Award for excellence in presidential news coverage, making him the first broadcast journalist to receive that honor.

"John Palmer brought to the White House beat his foreign policy experience and a steady reassuring voice, in good times and in bad," NBC News correspondent Andrea Mitchell said in describing Palmer for a report aired Saturday evening.

It was also at NBC's Washington news bureau that Palmer met his wife, Nancy, a Nightly News producer.

In 1982 he became news anchor on the "Today" show during a highly successful period when Bryant Gumbel and Jane Pauley co-hosted, bringing a seriousness and calm to the program while often being the first newsman that millions of viewers heard from each morning. He remained there until 1989, when he was abruptly replaced by Deborah Norville, who was being groomed for a co-host role, and handed her old job on the show that preceded it, "NBC News at Sunrise." Norville succeeded Pauley shortly afterward but was herself replaced after the show's ratings suddenly dropped.

In 1986, Palmer anchored the first hours of NBC's coverage of the Challenger space shuttle disaster, as well as other special reports.

Palmer left the network in 1990 to anchor a syndicated news program, hosted the weekly "Discovery Journal" on The Discovery Channel, and anchored a daily newscast on the TV channel of the Christian Science Monitor. His interview subjects ranged from Carter and Presidents Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan to Anwar Sadat, Jonas Salk and Chuck Yeager.

In 1994, he was invited back to NBC as a Washington correspondent.

Speaking to anchor Brian Williams on NBC sister network MSNBC upon his retirement in 2002, Palmer looked back on his tenure with satisfaction, including the access it gave him to a succession of the nation's chief executives.

"I was enriched as a kid from the East Tennessee mountains," said the Kingsport, Tenn., native, "to be able to go fishing with Jimmy Carter, to go to the movies with Ronald Reagan, and to play golf with Bill Clinton."

After exiting NBC, he continued to work in journalism, including through hosting roles on Retirement Living TV, a network dedicated to seniors.

Several of Palmer's colleagues praised him on Twitter on Saturday evening.

Major Garrett, chief White House correspondent for CBS News, described Palmer as "a brilliant, competitive, ethical and gentle man."

Susan Page, Washington bureau chief of USA Today, said she first met Palmer at the Reagan White House and described him as "one of the kindest/most joyful reporters on the beat."

NBC News reporter Chuck Todd said Palmer "epitomized professionalism at NBC News. And he was always generous with advice and counsel. A great news man."

Palmer was a graduate of Northwestern University and held a master's degree from Columbia University.

"John loved Sinatra, golf and fishing," Mitchell reported Saturday night, but she said he most treasured being a husband and father.

He and his wife Nancy have three grown daughters, one of whom is a producer for the Today show, one who works in the entertainment industry and one who is pursuing a journalism career in Washington.

Cory Monteith's mom tweets about son's death

Celebs

Immediately after the sudden and tragic death of "Glee" star Cory Monteith in mid-July, there was a period of respectful silence as friends and family tried to absorb what had happened.?

"Glee" is now heading back into production, and on Thursday more former co-stars began to speak up, as the show posted a memorial card on YouTube and Monteith's mother tweeted for the first time since her son's death:

McGregor also sent out several tweets?denying that an individual who had been "releasing articles related to my feelings and thoughts on how to take care of Cory's ashes has never been in contact with me."?

It's unclear exactly who McGregor was referring to, but Life & Style quoted a supposed cousin of the actor last week that McGregor planned to "spread some of the ashes in the different places he loved."

Additionally on Thursday, co-star Darren Criss appeared on "Conan" and spoke about working with Monteith. He said "it's been a very rough time," but added, "he will be severely missed. But I'm just so happy a guy like him got to touch as many lives as he did while we were lucky enough to have him."

Monteith died on July 13 in a Vancouver hotel of a mixture of a mix of heroin and alcohol and was reportedly cremated.?

Monteith's girlfriend Lea Michele, who had tweeted a photo of herself with Monteith on July 29, returned to work on "Glee" on Thursday and tweeted:

And the "Glee" cast also posted a short tribute "Memorial Card" on YouTube Thursday, which has already racked up nearly 850,000 hits.?

"Glee" returns on Sept. 26, then will go on a three-week hiatus.?

S. Court OKs early release plan for Calif. inmates

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Despite warnings from California officials, the nation's highest court is refusing to delay the early release of nearly 10,000 California inmates by year's end to ease overcrowding at 33 adult prisons.

In its decision Friday, the Supreme Court dismissed an emergency request by the Gov. Jerry Brown to halt a lower court's directive for the early release.

Law enforcement officials expressed concern about the ruling.

The justices ignored efforts already under way to reduce prison populations and "chose instead to allow for the release of more felons into already overburdened communities," said Covina Police Chief Kim Raney, president of the California Police Chiefs Association.

Brown's office referred a request for comment to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, where Secretary Jeff Beard vowed that the state would press on with a still-pending appeal in hope of preventing the releases.

A panel of three federal judges had previously ordered the state to cut its prison population by nearly 8 percent to roughly 110,000 inmates by Dec. 31 to avoid conditions amounting to cruel and unusual punishment. That panel, responding to decades of lawsuits filed by inmates, repeatedly ordered early releases after finding inmates were needlessly dying and suffering because of inadequate medical and mental health care caused by overcrowding.

Court-appointed experts found that the prison system had a suicide rate that worsened last year to 24 per 100,000 inmates, far exceeding the national average of 16 suicides per 100,000 inmates in state prisons.

Brown had appealed the latest decision of the panel and, separately, asked the U.S. Supreme Court to cancel the early release order while considering his arguments that the state is making significant progress in improving conditions. The high court refused Friday to stop the release but did not rule on the appeal itself. Corrections Secretary Beard said the state would press on with that, so the "merits of the case can be considered without delay."

However, inmate lawyer Don Specter, head of the Berkeley-based Prison Law Office, said the ruling Friday did not bode well for the overall appeal. He said the decision underscores what inmates have been arguing for years.

"The conditions are still overcrowded," he said. "The medical and health care remain abysmal."

Lawyers representing Brown had argued to the high court that releasing 10,000 more inmates would mean letting violent criminals out on the streets and overwhelm the abilities of law enforcement and social services to monitor them.

"No data suggests that a sudden release of inmates with these characteristics can be done safely," the state said in its filing. "No state has ever done it."

The panel of federal judges has consistently rejected that argument. The judges, prisoners' lawyers and others say other states have marginally reduced inmate sentences without sparking an increase in crime.

The governor said the state has already transferred thousands of low-level and nonviolent offenders to county jails, but that local officials in turn have been forced into releasing some inmates early to ease their own overcrowding issues.

The Supreme Court's ruling rejected Brown's plea over the objections of Justices Samuel Alito, Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas, who all said they would have granted the state's request.

Scalia, in a dissent joined by Thomas, wrote that the previous order by the three-judge panel was a "terrible injunction" that threatens public safety. Scalia said the state's evidence shows it has made meaningful progress and that such reductions in the inmate population are no longer necessary.

The legal battle goes back years. In 2011, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that California had to cut its inmate population to deal with unconstitutional prison conditions caused by overcrowding. It said that further delay in reducing prison overcrowding would further the substandard delivery of medical and mental health care and, by extension, lead to more inmate deaths and injuries.

In recent years, the special panel of federal judges accused Brown of attempting to delay and circumvent their orders. They previously threatened to cite the governor for contempt if he did not comply.

The judges waived all state laws in June as they ordered Brown to expand good-time credits leading to early release. They also directed the governor to take other steps, including sending more inmates to firefighting camps, paroling elderly felons, leasing cells at county jails and slowing the return of thousands of inmates now housed in private prisons in other states.

If those steps fail, the judges ordered the state to release by year's end enough inmates from a list of lower-risk offenders until it reaches the maximum allowed population.

In its latest filing with the Supreme Court, the state argued that no governor has the unilateral authority to take the steps ordered by the three-judge panel. That would require approval by the Legislature or judicial pre-emption of California's core police powers, the administration argued.

Brown has said the state is spending $2 billion on new or expanded facilities for inmate medical and mental health treatment. That includes seven new centers for mental health treatment and the opening last June of an $839 million prison hospital in Stockton that will treat 1,722 inmates requiring long-term care. The state also has boosted hiring and salaries for all types of medical and mental health professionals.

The state has already reduced the population by 46,000 inmates since 2006.

More than half of the decrease that has occurred so far is due to a two-year-old state law ? known as realignment ? that is sentencing offenders convicted of crimes considered nonviolent, non-serious and non-sexual to county jails instead of state prisons.

Glaciers protect Alps mountain peaks

Instead of wearing mountains down, evidence from Europe's high Alps shows that glaciers shield summits from erosion, acting as a protective lid.

French scientists studied erosion on Mont Blanc, western Europe's highest peak, below and around its glaciers.

Cold ice at the highest points froze to the mountain rock and played little part in erosion, the team said.

In contrast, water and rain eroded glacier-free areas 10 times faster than areas protected by the glacier.

Mountains don't grow to infinity, so there must be another mechanism which has lowered the summit of Europe?

End Quote Prof Fritz Schlunegger Bern University

The research was part of C?cile Godon's doctoral research at Universit? de Savoie, located on the edge of the French Alps, and appeared in the journal Earth and Planetary Sciences Letters.

The study focused on the Bossons glacier, which flows down the northern face of Mont Blanc towards the French town of Chamonix.

Rock debris, carved from the mountain at the toe of the Bossons glacier and sediments washed out in high mountain streams were compared with erosion in nearby glacier-free areas.

The researchers found that the cold glacial ice protected the mountain from erosion, rather than promoting it.

Rising ice

These results may explain the high altitude of the Alps. Driven by the tectonic collision of Europe with Africa, the high alpine bedrock is rising about one millimetre each year.

Glacier-free areas of the Alps erode at a similar rate but where the mountains are protected by ice, the peaks wear away at one tenth that rate.

Fritz Schlunegger, from Bern University, Switzerland, was not involved in the work and commented: "This group has used sediments at the end of Bossons glacier to determine where erosion is happening beneath the ice.

"Most material has been derived from the non-frozen part the glacier, while higher up towards (the summit of) Mont Blanc - where the glacier is frozen to the ground - erosion is much less," he told BBC News.

"This is really the first time, according to my knowledge, where this has been convincingly shown in a quantitative way and using a natural example.

"However, mountains don't grow to infinity, so there must be another mechanism which has lowered the summit of Europe. According to (Dr) Godon's findings, this erosion is not related to glaciers, so we still have to think about other possibilities."

Around the globe, mountain glaciers - especially those at low latitudes - are retreating in response to climate change, scientists say.

Reports earlier this year indicated that glaciers around Mount Everest had lost more than one eight of their area in the past 50 years, and the snowline had retreated 180 metres up the mountain sides.

Dr Godon's results suggest that changes like these could change the shapes of the world's highest mountains, and that climate and mountain landscape are intimately linked.

Ex-Woodland football players try their hands with D-I FCS colleges

Recent Woodland High School graduates and Doug Coman and Trevor Young plan to continue their football careers in non-scholarship situations at NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) college programs.

Coman, who played slot receiver and running back for the Wolves, has a preferred walk-on spot at Idaho State University in Pocatello, which plays in the Big Sky Conference. He is likely to be utilized as a slot receiver for the Bengals.

Young, a quarterback and receiver last season for Woodland, will walk on at the University of San Diego of the Pioneer Football League. Young is expected to try out at safety.

Coman and Young aren't guaranteed to see the field in 2013 but could eventually earn playing time and at least some financial aid from their schools. Full scholarships at the FCS level are not common.

Both players battled injuries in their senior seasons for the 2-8 Wolves. Coman broke his fibula in Week 1 and didn't return until Week 9. Young played much of the season with a fractured hand.

Ellen DeGeneres to host Oscars for 2nd time

NEW YORK (AP) ? Comic and daytime television host Ellen DeGeneres was picked to host the Academy Awards for the second time.

Show producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron announced DeGeneres' selection Friday. The movie awards show will air on ABC on March 2.

"There are few stars today who have Ellen's gift for comedy, with her great warmth and humanity," the producers said in a statement. "She is beloved everywhere."

DeGeneres quipped: "I am so excited to be hosting the Oscars for the second time. You know what they say ? the third time's the charm."

She also announced the gig on Twitter, posting: "It's official: I'm hosting the #Oscars! I'd like to thank @TheAcademy, my wife Portia and, oh dear, there goes the orchestra."

Last year's host, "Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane, drew mixed reviews for an edgy performance that included a song-and-dance number, "We Saw Your Boobs," about actresses who had gone topless on screen. He had already taken himself out of the running for a return engagement next year.

Academy Awards organizers had hoped to attract a younger audience with MacFarlane, and the ratings showed they succeeded.

With DeGeneres, they went for a star that Hollywood and television viewers were familiar and comfortable with.

About her first hosting role in 2007, television critic Frazier Moore of The Associated Press wrote that "like her, the evening was easygoing, comfortable and relatively unsurprising."

DeGeneres was nominated for an Emmy Award for her last gig. Her daytime talk show has won 45 Daytime Emmys during a decade on the air.

The Oscars, with 40.3 million viewers this year, is very often the year's most-watched television event after the Super Bowl.

Back in 2010, Newsweek merged with IAC-owned website The Daily Beast. (The magazine subseqeuntly ceased print publication and went digital-only.) However, earlier this year, IAC Chairman Barry Diller said that buying Newsweek was a mistake, one he would correct by selling it off.

Unemployment rate drops, but hiring just muddling along

Karen Dawal passes out information to job seekers during the East Bay's HIREvent on July 17, 2013 in Emeryville, California.

The U.S. economy created fewer jobs than expected in July, with the bulk of the them in areas, such as retail and restaurants, that typically are low-paying.

The Labor Department, in its widely watched jobs report, on Friday said non-farm employment rose by 162,000 and the unemployment rate slipped to 7.4 percent, the lowest in over four years. Gains in employment fueled some of that decline, but the labor force also shrank during the month, robbing some of the luster from the decline in the unemployment rate.

Employment increased in retail trade, food services and drinking establishments, financial activities and wholesale trade.?

The jobs growth, which missed expectations of an increase of 183,000 jobs, was enough to show the labor market continues to expand, but at a sluggish pace.

A broader gauge of unemployment that includes the underemployed and those who have quit looking for work also fell, from 14.3 percent in June to 14 percent in July.

"It's a much weaker number than was generally expected, and it's not troubling but it's a reminder that the labor market remains weak," said Milton Ezrati, senior economic strategist at Lord Abbett & Co.

Previous months' job creation numbers were revised lower, bucking a trend in which the counts mainly have been revised upwards.

The BLS now puts May job growth at 176,000, down from the previously reported 195,000, while June's figure fell to 188,000 from 195,000.

At the same time, long-term unemployment rose, with the average duration of joblessness now at 36.6 weeks.

And wage growth fell: After rising 10 cents an hour last month, average wages fell 2 cents to $23.98 an hour, while the average work week decreased by 0.1 hours to 34.4 hours.?

New York, NY ? A speedboat carrying the members of an upcoming wedding party slammed into a barge anchored in the Hudson River Friday night, July 26, 2013. The collision killed a woman believed to be the bride-to-be and the ?best man,? and hospitalized three others, the Chicago Tribune reported.

According to officials, the construction barge was anchored below the Tappan Zee Bridge when the boat collided with it.

A woman, identified as 30-year-old Lindsey Stewart, was pulled from the water by rescue crews on Saturday, while 30-year-old Mark Lennon?s body was discovered on Sunday. One other person remains missing.

Lennon was found just one mile south of Piermont around 11 a.m.

Three other victims were taken to area hospitals for medical treatment.

The operator of the boat, Jojo John 35, was reportedly under the influence of alcohol when the crash had occurred.

Police charged John with one count of vehicular manslaughter and three counts of second-degree vehicular assault. John is in custody at this time at a local hospital.

Investigations into the boating accident are underway.

When it comes to Windows RT, Microsoft will be the last man standing

Despite a near billion-dollar writeoff for the Surface, Microsoft shows no signs of abandoning Windows RT. But the company appears to be alone. When it comes to Windows RT, Microsoft may well be the last man standing.

Windows RT's woes are by now well-documented, notably a recent $900 million writeoff because of unsold Surface inventory. Based on the size of that writeoff, one estimate says that Microsoft has 6 million of the unsold tablets in inventory. Even And Steve Ballmer recently heartedly admitted that Microsoft built too many of the tablets.

But don't expect Microsoft to abandon RT because of that. Brian Hall, the General Manager of Surface Marketing, recently told Mary Jo Foley that in her words, "Microsoft is 100 percent committed to Surface RT and Windows RT going forward and has no plans to drop work on either product." There's certainly no wiggle room there. Hall also believes that the recent Surface price cut to $350 will juice demand for RT tablets, and said, "We know we need a lot of Surface users to start the fly wheel of people recommending it."

Microsoft may well end up being alone in its support of Windows RT. Asus Chairman Jonney Shih recently said of his company's foray into producing RT tablets, "The result is not very promising." Asus isn't the only company to find that out. IDC recently released an estimate that only 200,000 RT tablets were sold in the first quarter of 2013.

Acer hasn't released an RT-based tablet, and based on what company president Jim Wong says, it's not likely the company ever will.?And last month, Lenovo halted Web sales of the RT-based Yoga 11 convertible.

Samsung had originally plannned to release an RT tablet in the U.S., but ended up abandoning it. Mike Abary, Samsung senior vice president in charge of the PC and tablet businesses in the United States, explained the decision this way:

"There wasn't really a very clear positioning of what Windows RT meant in the marketplace, what it stood for relative to Windows 8, that was being done in an effective manner to the consumer. When we did some tests and studies on how we could go to market with a Windows RT device, we determined there was a lot of heavy lifting we still needed to do to educate the customer on what Windows RT was. And that heavy lifting was going to require pretty heavy investment. When we added those two things up, the investments necessary to educate the consumer on the difference between RT and Windows 8, plus the modest feedback that we got regarding how successful could this be at retail from our retail partners, we decided maybe we ought to wait."

Patrick Moorhead, an analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy bluntly told Computerworld:

"Windows RT is challenged. OEM's are not interested in Windows RT."

Tom Mainelli, an analyst at IDC, warns that Windows 8.1 will make it tougher, not easier for Microsoft to sell RT tablets. RT "continues to be a very hard sell to consumers," he told Computerworld, and then added:

"The upcoming 8.1 update and resulting name change is likely to confuse people even more, since they're calling it Windows RT 8.1."

So if you want an RT tablet, expect that you'll be buying it from Microsoft. When it comes to RT, the company appears to be an army of one.

Why Did Washington Hate Hugo Chavez? An Interview with Author and Revolutionary Eva Golinger

Eva Golinger, winner of the International Award for Journalism in Mexico (2009), named ?La Novia de Venezuela? by President Hugo Ch?vez, is an Attorney and Writer from New York, living in Caracas, Venezuela since 2005 and author of the best-selling books, ?The Ch?vez Code: Cracking US Intervention in Venezuela? (2006 Olive Branch Press), ?Bush vs. Ch?vez: Washington?s War on Venezuela? (2007, Monthly Review Press), ?The Empire?s Web: Encyclopedia of Interventionism and Subversion?, ?La Mirada del Imperio sobre el 4F: Los Documentos Desclasificados de Washington sobre la rebeli?n militar del 4 de febrero de 1992? and ?La Agresi?n Permanente: USAID, NED y CIA?. Since 2003, Eva, a graduate of Sarah Lawrence College and CUNY Law School in New York, has been investigating, analyzing and writing about US intervention in Venezuela using the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) to obtain information about US Government efforts to undermine progressive movements in Latin America. Her first book, The Ch?vez Code, has been translated and published in 8 languages (English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Russian, Farsi & Turkish) and is presently being made into a feature film.

Mike Whitney: There was very limited coverage of Hugo Chavez?s death in the United States. Can you briefly describe the reaction of the Venezuelan people?

Eva Golinger: Chavez?s death was devastating for Venezuelans. Despite knowing about his illness, most Venezuelans thought he would win the battle against cancer like so many other battles he won before. The reaction was a collective cry of deep despair and sadness, but also of love, profound love for this person, this man who gave every last breath he had to making his country a better place for all. Ten days of mourning were officially declared in the country and Chavez?s casket was placed for millions to pay respects to before the final funeral occurred. People spent up to 36 hours waiting in line to say goodbye to Chavez at the Military Academy where his political consciousness came to life, and where his casket was placed temporarily after his shocking death. Then, on the tenth day, a mass parade of people accompanied Chavez?s funeral procession to the hilltop ?Cuartel de la Monta?a? (Barracks of the Mountain) across from the presidential palace Miraflores in Caracas, where he was laid to rest in a strikingly beautiful tomb called ?The Four Elements?. The Cuartel de la Monta?a is where Chavez launched his political career in February 1992 during an attempted military rebellion against a corrupt and murderous neo-liberal president. He failed at that attempt and went to prison, but his message and charisma reached millions, who joined his movement that later led to his election as president in 1998. Chavez?s tomb site, ?The Four Elements?, includes his casket resting on top of a beautifully sculpted lilypad on fresh water and clean earth. It sits in the open air with a burning eternal flame. Still to this day hundreds of Venezuelans visit the site, hoping for a chance to be close to their beloved president.

MW: Chavez was an inspirational and charismatic leader who was able to push through progressive policies that benefited the majority of people. Will the Bolivarian Revolution continue under current Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro or has there been a shift in direction?

EG: The Bolivarian Revolution is continuing with President Maduro, there has been no shift in direction. Despite winning the presidential election in April with a narrow margin, Maduro has not altered Chavez?s policies in any significant way, in fact, he is trying to consolidate them further. He did change many cabinet members, but this was viewed as a positive move, especially because he brought in a lot of younger, unorthodox people instead of sticking with those who had been shuffled around Chavez?s administration for years. He did keep many of Chavez?s people, because of course Maduro is one of them, but he brought in fresh blood to show he was willing to make some necessary changes. For example, he named a frequent critic of Chavez?s community-based policies, Reinaldo Iturriza, as Minister of Communes, which is a ministry dedicated to helping organized communities with resource management and project development. Iturriza himself was a grassroots organizer and he replaced a bureaucrat. Maduro has so far kept the economic policies of Chavez?s government, though he changed the cabinet members in charge of them. He has cracked down harder on government corruption and crime. Dozens of public officials have already been arrested for corruption and he militarized high crime areas in order to get violence and insecurity under control. So I would say he picked up where Chavez left off and accelerated.

MW: Could you sum up some of Chavez?s most important achievements as President?

EG: Chavez?s achievements as President are vast and numerous. He transformed Venezuela from a dependent, cowardly nation with no national identity, mass poverty and stark apathy to a sovereign, independent and dignified country, full of national pride, cherishing its rich cultural diversity. He also reduced poverty by well over 50%, implemented successful, quality free universal healthcare and education programs and diversified the economy with the creation of new industries in the nation and thousands of new small business owners and cooperatives. One of his greatest achievements has been the collective awakening of consciousness in the country. Venezuela was so apathetic before Chavez became President, worse than the United States. Today it is a place where elections draw over 80% voluntary participation. Everyone talks about politics and issues of importance to the nation. Youth want to participate in the construction of their country, their future. Over the past few years the youngest members of Congress (National Assembly) have been elected in history, with legislators as young as 25 years old. Half of the members of Maduro?s new executive cabinet are under 45. There are new youth movements, student movements ? both opposition and chavista ? that are active and participating in political life. And there is no question that Chavez?s social policies and over 60% investment of the national budget annually in social programs made a massive difference in everyday Venezuelans? lives. Today there is more consumer power, Venezuelans enjoy better nutrition, have more dignified homes and Chavez also propelled worker-friendly laws that guarantee a living wage (the highest minimum wage in Latin America) and strong workers? benefits. There are many things he was unable to complete, but what he did achieve is extraordinary for a bit more than a decade in power, considering he also had to transform corrupt, inefficient and broken state institutions and face a US-backed opposition with immense economic power.

MW: You have written extensively about US intelligence agencies and NGO covert activities in Venezuela. Do you see any sign that the meddling has decreased since Chavez died?

EG: No. US intervention in Venezuela has progressively increased each year since Chavez was first elected in 1998. During the April 2002 coup d?etat against him, which was defeated by the people and loyal armed forces, the US was backing the opposition, but with moderate aid considering what they are doing today. Each year, funding for anti-Chavez groups has increased by millions, coming through USAID, the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), the State Department, and other US-funded agencies, such as Freedom House, International Republican Institute (IRI) and National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI). In fact, Obama not only increased the funding to anti-Chavez groups, he made it even more official by openly including such funding in the annual Foreign Operations Budget. There is a special paragraph dedicated to funding for Venezuelan opposition groups, or as they call it, ?democracy promotion?. I have extensively proven in my investigations that this funding has gone to finance destabilization and very undemocratic organizations and activities in Venezuela. We know from documents released by Wikileaks and more recently by Edward Snowden, that US espionage in Venezuela increased exponentially this year, as Chavez?s health worsened. The US threw a massive amount of economic and political power behind losing presidential candidate Henrique Capriles, and has been the only nation to refuse to officially recognize President Nicolas Maduro?s electoral victory in April. Washington will continue to back the opposition in hopes that Maduro?s term can be recalled in a referendum in three years, when he?s reached the halfway point of his six-year term and constitutionally can be held accountable in a recall referendum. The US is banking on achieving his ouster then, if not before through other undemocratic means. Several leading opposition members have been caught recently in plots to attempt a coup against Maduro, as well as plan his assassination. All of them frequently travel to Washington for ?meetings?. The Venezuelan government also recently ended a dialogue established with Washington that began in January after offensive statements made by incoming US Ambassador to the United Nations, Samantha Power. Maduro?s administration, like Chavez?s, longs to have a respectful relationship with the US government. But they will not stand for aggression, meddling, or otherwise interventionist behavior. The US seems unable to engage in a mature, respectful relationship with Venezuela.

MW: Here?s something that Barack Obama said in an interview with Univision when Chavez was on his deathbed. He said, ?The most important thing is to remember that the future of Venezuela should be in the hands of the Venezuelan people. We?ve seen from Ch?vez in the past authoritarian policies, suppression of dissent.?

Was there a reaction to Obama?s comment in Venezuela?

EG: Definitely there was a very strong reaction. First of all, the comments were viewed as completely disrespectful to the nation and government at a time when Chavez?s health was deteriorating. They clearly indicated that the Obama administration is ignorant about Venezuela and has no concern for the massive, collective emotional difficulties millions in the country were experiencing due to Chavez?s failing health. President Chavez?s number one objective ? which he achieved to a great extent ? was transferring power to the people. Obama?s hypocrisy in such a statement overshadows his own failure to comprehend Venezuela?s reality. More people in Venezuela participate in political life than ever before, and many more than in the US (percentage-wise). In an era of mass espionage, selective assassinations, drones, secret prisons, grave human rights violations and other repressive policies led by the US, Obama should think twice about characterizing another nation?s government that he only knows about from talking points uninformed analysts provide him with. In sum, Venezuelans were outraged as Obama?s insensitive and disrespectful remarks, but they were not surprised. Those comments are typical of Washington?s hostile position towards Venezuela throughout the Chavez administration.

MW: Why did Washington hate Chavez?

EG: I suppose Washington hated Chavez for many reasons. Of course the oil is a primary source of Washington?s aggressive attitude towards Chavez. Venezuela has the largest oil reserves on the planet and before Hugo Chavez was elected, governments were subservient to US interests. In fact, Venezuela was on the verge of privatizing its oil industry, along with everything else in the country, right when Chavez was elected. So the fact that a head of state sitting on the world?s largest oil reserves ? which the US needs to maintain its excessive consumer model in the long term ? would not be subordinate to US agenda was maddening for Washington. Chavez not only reclaimed and transformed the oil industry to redistribute the wealth and ensure foreign corporations abided by the laws (paying taxes and royalties, for example), but he also nationalized other strategic resources in the country that the US had its hands in, such as gold, electricity and telecommunications. Clearly Chavez was a major thorn in Washington?s economic interests in the region. Once Chavez spearheaded the creation of Latin American integration and cooperation, that converged into organizations such as the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR), the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our Americas (ALBA), the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), as well as PetroCaribe, Telesur (the region?s first television network) and many more initiatives, Washington quickly began to lose influence in the region. This also led to more hostility towards Chavez, since he was the major leader and driving force behind Latin American independence and sovereignty in the XXI century. Washington, and the Venezuelan elite, also couldn?t stand Chavez?s mannerisms and direct way of telling things like they are. He was afraid of nothing and no one and never stood down, he always remained firm and said what he believed, even if it wasn?t the diplomatically correct thing to say. And Washington hated him for bringing back the evil concept of socialism to today?s world. They tried to hard to rid the planet of anything remotely like communism in the XX century, so Chavez?s ?Socialism of the XXI Century? was a slap in the face for old school Washington, which still holds the reigns in the US.

MW: Would you like to add your personal thoughts about Chavez?s passing?

EG: Chavez?s death is impossible to accept. He was such a vibrant, motivating force, full of love and genuine affection for people and life. He had an extraordinary capacity of communication and could connect with anyone in a sincere embrace of humanity. He was a brilliant visionary and a maker of dreams. He helped people see the potential within themselves and realize our capabilities. He adored his country, its rich culture, music, diversity, and he truly gave every piece of himself to building a dignified, strong and beautiful Venezuela. I was one of the fortunate ones to be his close friend and share many exceptional moments with him. He had weaknesses and imperfections, like we all do, but his capacity to love and care about all people led him to overcome many difficult ? almost impossible ? obstacles. He really believed he would defeat cancer, and of course we all hoped he would. His passing leaves a deep emptiness and profound sadness for millions. His energy was so infinite, it?s hard to not feel it everywhere still, around us, leading and guiding the revolution he helped build. That?s why it?s so difficult to accept his leaving, because he is still so present in our lives, and of course in every inch of Venezuela. Chavez became Venezuela, la patria querida, and his legacy will continue to grow and flourish as Venezuela blossoms into its full potential.

Cantaloupes Delivered to GOP Backers of King Amendment

DREAMers prepare to deliver cantaloupes to the offices of the 224 House members who voted in favor of King?s amendment. (Douglas Graham/CQ Roll Call)

More than a dozen activists gathered on Capitol Hill on Thursday bearing gifts: cantaloupes ? 224 of them.

Volunteers with United Farm Workers, United We Dream and America?s Voice are spending the day delivering these heavy, ovoid fruits to the office of every House member who voted for Rep. Steve King?s amendent to the Homeland Security appropriations bill blocking a White House directive to halt deportation of young undocumented immigrants brought to the country illegally by their parents ? the ?DREAMers.?

The gag gift is, of course, because of King?s remark that many DREAMers are drug mules with ?calves the size of cantaloupes because they?ve been hauling 75 pounds of marijuana across the desert.? The GOP leadership has condemned those remarks, but King is not an easy problem for them to solve.

?Immigrants are actually doing back-breaking work on out nation?s farms to bring cantaloupes and other crops to America?s grocery stores and breakfast tables every day,? the activists? press release countered.

Each cantaloupe has been afixed with printed notes: ?This cantaloupe was picked by immigrants in California? and ?you gave Steve King a vote. Give us a vote for citizenship.?

A spokeswoman for the coalition said the cantaloupes were procured from Safeway and other local stores, and that UFW ensured they were, in fact, harvested by immigrants.

BT Sport v Sky: battle kicks off to win sports TV fans

Manchester United in action in the Premier League

All to play for: Sky and BT battle it out to win over sports fans for the big live games. Photograph: Phil Noble/REUTERS

Until recently, the viewing choice for big sports fans was relatively limited. You simply signed up for Sky Sports and settled down in a comfy chair for the season. But the arrival this week of BT Sport's two channels ? the first broadcasts were on Thursday ? has thrown that into some disarray.

BT has spent ?736m for the right to broadcast Premier League games, and has captured exclusive coverage of the Premiership rugby season.

The telecoms firm says its sports service is "free" for its broadband customers, but in reality many will be forking out at least ?5 a month to access the service.

What's on offer?

BT reckons its big draw is the 38 Premier League live football matches it has exclusive rights to over the coming season, compared to the 115 matches Sky will be screening. But are you aware that most of the BT games are being shown at 12.45pm on a Saturday? Lunchtime is not exactly peak viewing time except for all but the most committed. BT says it will be offering some weekday evening matches later in the season, but no matches during peak weekend early evenings when big audiences tune in.

Perhaps more attractive ? to rugby fans, at least ? is its coverage of Aviva Premiership Rugby. BT Sport will show exclusive live coverage of up to 69 matches a season for the next four years, plus a host of other action.

What's the deal ? for new and existing BT customers?

BT says anyone who takes its broadband service can access BT Sport for nothing over a computer, iPad or phone, but may need to pay ?5 a month to watch on a standard television set. BT's basic broadband costs ?10 a month, or you can pay ?15 for capped usage on its superfast Infinity (fibre) broadband or ?26 a month for unlimited usage. On top of this is a line rental charge of ?15.45.

To get the sport channels on your TV you have to commit to a 12-month contract, or have at least 12 months remaining on your existing contract.

Users can watch the BT Sport channels in one of four ways:

? The easiest and cheapest is on an iPad or other tablet or PC via the BT Sport app, although most will want to be able to watch on an actual TV set. For reasons unexplained the app service is not available to internet-connected smart TVs.

? BT broadband customers who are also Sky TV customers, with a set-top box and Skyviewing card, can register the card and watch for nothing via the Sky platform. If they want BT sport in high definition it will cost ?3 a month.

? Those outside BT's Infinity (fast broadband) area need a Vision+ set-top box. This has a ?49 activation fee if you sign up to BT TV, plus a ?5 monthly payment, or can be bought outright for ?199 with no ongoing charge. The BT Sport signal comes via your digital aerial in the same way as Freeview.

Those in non-urban areas, whose broadband speed is less than 2.2Mbps, won't be able to access the on-demand services, which come via broadband.

? Customers who are in an Infinity-served area have to take the more expensive fibre broadband if they want BT Sport via BT TV. They can also opt for the all-singing, all-dancing YouView digital box which delivers the TV signal via the broadband connection.

This box offers a host of other TV services, such as on-demand. If you buy it outright it costs ?299, otherwise again it has a ?49 connection fee and ?5-a-month payment.

Rather strangely, BT customers with the older Vision+ box can add the Sky Sports 1 and 2 channels for ?20 a month, but only if they have the Infinity broadband. Those with the YouView box can't, although they do get access to ESPN sports channel.

I am a Sky TV customer. Can I access BT Sport games cheaply?

If you're not (and don't want to become) a BT broadband customer, you simply have to pay extra if you want to also access BT Sport's two channels. This will cost ?12 a month, or ?15 if you want HD. Contact BT, hand over your card details and the channels will magically appear on your Sky box.

How about Virgin and TalkTalk TV customers?

Virgin says it is looking at adding BT Sport to its packages, but had no deal in place at the time of writing. TalkTalk, which gives its customers access to all of Sky's six sports channels for ?30 a month on a pay-as-you-go basis, says it is not currently looking at offering the BT channels. That might change in the future if BT grabs more exclusive sports rights.

Is it worth switching, and what are the downsides?

BT is hoping that its sports offering will be enough to tempt people away from Sky, but the only group we can see that would be likely to switch will be hardcore rugby fans. So far 500,000 customers, who mostly already have BT broadband, have signed up.

Is the deal worth switching broadband and home phone provider?

Probably not. Money has recently received many complaints from readers who have tried to get BT phone lines fixed or installed over the past few months.

Switching your service to BT might go without a hitch, but it could also be problematic. BT says it has taken on new call centre staff and engineers to cope with the demand it expects ? however, it won't go down well if you leave the rest of family without internet access for a few weeks in your attempts to gain some football coverage.

There are also increasing tales of problems with BT Infinity, with lots of customers reporting a loss of download speed after a few weeks of it being installed ? something to consider.

Critics have already suggested that BT would have been better to spend the money on sorting out customer service rather than on football rights.

What are the other options?

There's no need to do anything if you are happy listening to live games on the radio and watching Match of the Day highlights on a Saturday night. Trips to the pub for the big games are an option.

Alternatively, Sky's Now TV allows you to buy a one-day Sky Sports pass for ?9.99. If there are only a few games a season you "have" to watch live, this is the way to go.

Sky has also just launched a very basic box that will allow people to stream Sky Sports and Sky Movies channels on-demand to their TV, without a standard subscription, for just ?9.99 ? and you can then buy the bits of the service you want on a pay-as-you-go basis.

Uruguay takes step toward full pot legalization

MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay (AP) ? Uruguay's unprecedented plan to put the government at the center of a legal marijuana industry has made it halfway through congress, giving President Jose Mujica a long-sought victory in his effort to explore alternatives to the global war on drugs.

All 50 members of the governing Broad Front coalition approved the proposal in a party line vote just before midnight Wednesday, keeping a narrow majority of the 96 lawmakers present after more than 13 hours of passionate debate.

The measure now goes to the Senate, where Mujica's coalition has a bigger majority and passage is expected to come within weeks for the proposal to make Uruguay the world's first nation to create a legal, regulated marijuana market.

"Sometimes small countries do great things," said Ethan Nadelmann, executive director of the U.S. Drug Policy Alliance. "Uruguay's bold move does more than follow in the footsteps of Colorado and Washington. It provides a model for legally regulating marijuana that other countries, and U.S. states, will want to consider - and a precedent that will embolden others to follow in their footsteps."

Marijuana legalization efforts have gained momentum across the Americas in recent years as leaders watch the death toll rise from military responses to unabated drug trafficking in Mexico and Central America. Presidents Juan Manuel Santos of Colombia and Otto Perez Molina of Guatemala also have called for reforms, and a recent report by a commission of the Organization of American States encouraged new approaches, including legalization of marijuana.

But no sitting president has gone as far as Mujica to support the creation of legal alternatives to marijuana trafficking.

"At the heart of the Uruguayan marijuana regulation bill is a focus on improving public health and public safety," said Hannah Hetzer, a Drug Policy Alliance staffer who moved to Montevideo to help shepherd the proposal. "Instead of closing their eyes to the problem of drug abuse and drug trafficking, Uruguay is taking an important step towards responsible regulation of an existing reality."

Legislators in the governing coalition said putting the government at the center of a legal marijuana industry is worth trying because the global war on drugs had been a costly and bloody failure, and displacing illegal dealers through licensed pot sales could save money and lives.

They also hope to eliminate a legal contradiction in Uruguay, where it has been legal to use pot but against the law to sell it, buy it, produce it or possess even one marijuana plant.

Critics warned that marijuana opens the way for other drugs and said fostering the bad habits of addicts is playing with fire.

Mujica said he never consumed marijuana, but believes regulations are necessary because many other people do, even though recent polls suggest two-thirds of Uruguayans oppose the plan.

National Party Deputy Gerardo Amarilla said the government was underestimating the risk of marijuana, which he called a "gateway drug" for other chemical addictions that foster violent crimes.

"Ninety-eight percent of those who are today destroying themselves with base cocaine began with marijuana," Amarilla said. "I believe that we're risking too much. I have the sensation that we're playing with fire."

Under the legislation, Uruguay's government would license growers, sellers and consumers, and update a confidential registry to keep people from buying more than 40 grams a month.

Carrying, growing or selling pot without a license could bring prison terms, but licensed consumers could grow up to six plants at a time at home.

Growing clubs with up to 45 members each would be encouraged, fostering enough marijuana production to drive out unlicensed dealers and draw a line between pot smokers and users of harder drugs.

The latest proposal "has some adjustments, aimed at strengthening the educational issue and prohibiting driving under the effects of cannabis," ruling coalition deputy Sebastian Sabini said. "There will be self-growing clubs, and it will also be possible to buy marijuana in pharmacies" that is mass-produced by private companies.

An Institute for Regulation and Control of Cannabis would be created, with the power to grant licenses for all aspects of a legal industry to produce marijuana for recreational, medicinal or industrial use.

Dozens of pro-marijuana activists followed the debate from balconies overlooking the house floor, while others outside held signs and danced to reggae music.

"This law consecrates a reality that already exists: The marijuana sales market has existed for a long time, but illegally, buying it from traffickers, and in having plants in your house for which you can be thrown in jail," said Camilo Collazo, a 25-year-old anthropology student. "We want to put an end to this, to clean up and normalize the situation."

The heavy toll, costs and questionable results of military responses to illegal drugs have motivated marijuana legalization initiatives in the U.S. states of Colorado and Washington, and inspired many world leaders to re-think drug laws.

The secretary-general of the Organization of American States, Jose Miguel Inzulza, told Mujica last week that his members had no objections. Pope Francis, however, said during his visit to Brazil that the "liberalization of drugs, which is being discussed in several Latin American countries, is not what will reduce the spread of chemical substances."

Florida declares two butterfly species extinct as pollinator crisis worsens

Conservationist?s faced a crushing blow last month as two butterfly species native to Florida were declared extinct.

"Occasionally, these types of butterflies disappear for long periods of time but are rediscovered in another location," said Larry Williams, U.S. Fish and Wildlife state supervisor for ecological services. We think it?s apparent now these two species are extinct."

Neither species has been seen in any environment for at least nine years, the latter of the two not being seen since 2000. This calamity is only made worse by the fact that so much could have been done in order to save these creatures. The first species, the Zestos skipper butterfly (Epargyreus zestos oberon), had strong bodies with large black eyes and large wings that were adorned with spots that looked like eyes. While the Zestos skipper was visibly declining in its environment, the subspecies was denied access to the U.S.?s Endangered Species Act (ESA) because of the confusion between it and other skipper species in the Bahamas. In the end, what was thought to be a bountiful reserve in the Bahamas proved to be a completely different species. By the time the mistake was realized it proved too late.

The Rockland grass skipper butterfly (Hesperia meskei pinocayo), an amber golden insect with club like antenna and black eyes, was similarly thought to be making a comeback as the species that had not been seen since the 80?s was spotted back in 2000. But is now believed extinct.

The extinction of these animals "serves as a wake-up call that we really need to intensify our efforts to save other imperiled butterflies," according to Williams.

Both species vanished almost overnight as conservationists and scientists realized that the abundant populations of these species simply did not exist.

The extinction of these species may have far-reaching environmental repercussion. One of the most important ecological services performed by butterflies is pollination Ninety percent of plants on our planet require pollinators in order to reproduce, and butterflies are a key part of this process for many plants. While not regularly known as keystone pollinators, butterflies are actually capable of dispersing pollen farther than honeybees since they don?t have to return to a hive with the pollen they have collected.

Butterflies also serve as crucial indicator species. Because of their short life cycles and close reliance on the climate, butterflies are excellent indicators of environmental stress. The extinction of both these species in such a short span is a clear sign of degradation. Researchers believe that habitat loss likely played a key role in these species? loss. In addition, extreme weather events such as hurricanes or droughts--while before would only help to regulate the population--may now directly cause extinction in much reduced population numbers.

The extinction of the Zestos skipper and the rockland grass skipper marks a new contribution towards the ever-worsening pollinator crisis. The same factors that led to their extinction, such as a growing human population and a dwindling natural habitat for animals, is only exacerbated with every year.
