Ancient history professor revives medieval times ? Griffon News

By Michelle Cordonnier

October 30, 2012

Missouri Western recently enhanced the history department by adding a new professor to the staff to teach Ancient and Medieval History and Early Modern History. Eventually, Dr. Jay Lemanski will help to expand the upper level history courses by introducing and teaching classes on ancient Rome and ancient Greece.

Lemanski is originally from Detroit. He came to Western from his most recent appointment as a Senior Lecturer for the history department at the University of Akron in Akron, Ohio. From 2003-2012, Lemanski was also a teaching assistant and an instructor at Akron.

?I am from a big city, and I grew kind of tired of living in a larger community,? Lemanski said. ?I enjoy the smaller community; the countryside around St. Joseph is nice. I like the idea of having big city amenities and the small-town feeling that St. Joseph offers.?

Lemanski is enjoying the transition from big city living to the smaller community of St. Joseph, and he is happy with the colleagues he has met since being at Western. Lemanski said the smaller campus gives the college and community a more intimate quality than the larger colleges offer.

?I am very pleased with the instructors and students that I have met since coming to Western,? Lemanski said. ?They are the nicest people, and have made me feel very welcome.?

Junior Kristen Brantley is taking Lemanski?s Ancient and Medieval History course, which she is enjoying this semester. She said she has had trouble in history classes before, but so far this semester she has learned a lot from Lemanski?s teaching style.

?He has a passion for the subject,? Brantley said. ?He?s not just passing out information, but actually making the material more relatable. College is tough, and he makes it easier by providing us with study guides, easily readable maps ?and interesting readings.?

Lemanski is educated in a variety of subjects, such as history and modern languages. He earned his bachelor?s degree at Concordia College in Ann Arbor, Mich., in 1983. Lemanski was a dual major in Greek and Hebrew with a minor in Latin.

In 1985, he received his first master?s degree at the University of Michigan in near eastern studies. Lemanski continued to study at the University of Michigan and received his?doctorate?in 1989.

The year 2005 brought Lemanski his second master?s degree in history department. Lemanski passed his Ph.D. comprehensive exams in 2007 with distinctions in Medieval, Early Modern Europe, the Middle East and the United States pre-1877.

In 2007, Lemanski also won a one-year Robert W. Little Graduate Research Fellowship, and in 2008, he was awarded a Graduate Student Government Research Grant from the University of Akron. The year 2009 finally brought Lemanski his Ph.D. in history from the University of Akron.

In addition to his extensive knowledge of history, Lemanski is skilled in many language cultures, such as: German, Greek, Latin, Arabic, Anglo-Saxon, Hebrew, Sumerian, Akkadian, Ugaritic and French.

?Lemanski?s use of other languages helps to illustrate certain points in ancient Greece and ancient Rome,? Brantley said.

Lemanski also has the ability to decipher and translate ancient Greek and Roman clay tablets from the beginnings of written language.

Throughout Lemanski?s years of schooling, he has worked in the education field as an assistant librarian of rare books and as reference librarian. He has also worked for the New York Times as an Indexer for the University Microfilms International and has taught courses in Absolution to Revolution, Ancient Middle Eastern Studies, Renaissance and Religious Studies, Early and Late Medieval European Studies, the Latin Language, Middle Eastern Studies and Humanities in the Western Tradition.

?This is my last history course required for my degree, but if I had to take another one, I would definitely consider taking a different course taught by Dr. Lemanski,? Brantley said.

Lemanski said he?s enjoying teaching at Western more than anything else. He feels that the students are very diverse for a smaller community and is enjoying getting to know them through the classes he teaches.

?The best part of Missouri Western is the students,? Lemanski said. ?I like the students; I enjoy talking to them, and getting to know them. They are very interesting and engaging. I like teaching them. I have great students here at Missouri Western, I couldn?t ask for more.?

Hybrids and Electric Vehicles Do Well in Reliability Survey ...

Hybrid vehicles, and those powered by electricity in one form or another, have good predicted reliability in the Consumer Reports 2012 Annual Auto Reliability Survey.

The survey predicts the reliability of 2013 models based on tracking of the reliability of vehicles up to 10 years old.

This year?s analysis is based on data from 1.2 million 2003-12 model-year vehicles leased or owned by Consumer Reports subscribers.

Magazine editors noted that reliability is a high point this year for all hybrids but the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. It was the only one that had a worse-than-average rating for predicted reliability.

The Toyota Prius, the Prius V (the larger hatchback Prius) and the new Prius Plug-in were all above average in predicted reliability.

The Chevrolet Volt, a plug-in hybrid, also has above-average predicted reliability.

The all-electric Nissan Leaf has above-average predicted reliability, and the editors said it was the Nissan model with the best predicted reliability.

?There?s no rocket science to electric cars,? said Jake Fisher, director of automotive testing for Consumer Reports. ?There were electric cars before there were gas-powered cars; it seems to be a reliable technology.?

And despite dire predictions about the longevity of nickel-metal hydride batteries and the high cost of replacing them in hybrid vehicles, there have been few problems.

?We?ve got Priuses out there with 200,000 miles on them and 12 years in service,? and if a battery has a problem, it is very inexpensive to fix, Mr. Fisher said.

?So the whole thing about the sky falling and the $10,000 battery hasn?t happened,? he said.

The jury is still out, however, on the longevity of the new lithium-ion batteries that power the Leaf, Volt and Prius Plug-in, he said.

Subscribers can view the survey results at the Consumer Reports Web site. Nonsubscribers will be able to get access to a preview of the survey there. The complete survey will appear in the December issue of the magazine, which goes on sale Nov. 6.

Disaster Apps | Survival And Prosperity

Disaster Apps

While surfing the Web this afternoon I happened to catch an article on the FOX News website about ?apps? for iPhones and Android-based phones.

Some pretty handy apps here. I?m particularly drawn to the ?Disaster Readiness? app. From the piece:

An affordable app that could make a difference, Disaster Readiness is an emergency prep guide with more than 175,000 reference guides on how to respond to any disaster situation. Should the power go out, you won?t be able to rely upon the Internet for information. This handy app should have all the info you need, with sections on floods, fires, evacuation, and how to find or create shelter in an emergency.

175,000 reference guides all in one place- and without needing Internet access to get to them?

I?m impressed.

Check out the article here on the FOX News website.

Ancestral Discoveries: Genealogy Served on a Silver Platter

Ever wonder what it would feel like to just be handed all the information on your family?? You know, kind of like what happened on episodes of Who Do You Think You Are? and Finding Your Roots:? family trees, death certificates, photographs, military discharge papers, what have you.? But that never really happens, right?

Meet my friend Carol.

Over the years it has become a running joke between us.? Every so often, a family member contacts her and says, "Oh, I'd like to send you a copy of all the research I've done."? Then she receives another well put together and well documented part of her family tree, often with supporting materials.? She already has several copies of different trees and boxes of original letters and documents from both sides of her family.

She was just given another bonanza.

She received two large envelopes full of documents and a USPS Medium Flat Rate box of photo albums and loose photos.? Most of the photos are even labeled!

Among the documents are:
? eight family trees for various lines
? a typed transcript of her great-uncle interviewing her great-grandmother, including the story of how her family was instrumental in the founding of a town in Iowa
? two copies of a treatise on one of her family names
? two copies of a book about the church her ancestor established in the 1600's
? a photo of her grandfather's high school graduating class from 1917
? her grandfather's entire probate file, including correspondence

? original documents from when a relative legally changed his name
? her grandmother's college diploma and teaching certificate
? an original copy of her grandmother's death certificate from Spain (which probably would have been difficult to replace)
? original U.S. Army discharge papers
? a "whole pile" of family letters
? newspaper clippings
? church bulletins
? visitor books from funeral services

Carol's aunt (her mother's sister) collected all of this information.? She has moved to assisted living, and the aunt's daughter had to clean out the home.? This cousin talked with her brothers and her own children, but no one wanted all of the genealogical stuff.? Rather than just throw everything out, she asked around the family to find someone who did want it (hooray!).? Carol got all of this because, unlike her friend, when these items needed a home, she recognized their value.

Of course, now everything needs to be taken care of -- sorted out, put in archival boxes, separated with nonreactive paper.? And some of this is duplicates of what she already has.? But I know that Carol is up to the task.? Now if she were only more interested in genealogy ....

What was that?? No, of course I'm not jealous.? Whatever made you think so?

Brandeis International Business School, International/cross-cultural ...

Hey Every one,I am stuck with my application to Brandeis International Business school. Been asked about my?. '' International/cross-cultural experiences that I bring to Brandeis International Business School and how will this contribute to the classroom??""This is the reality;I was born in Uganda and studied from there till my last year of High school. I then relocated to Rwanda where I did my last year of High school before joining the University. At different stages of my uni in Rwanda, i was involved in a couple of programs and projects that though were not related to my school work, exposed me to lots of people from all over the world. I was always challenged by the numerous international students here for their internships. Why challenged? Because they always managed to make me feel so inexperienced, unprepared academically. With time and through hours of 'curious' conversations I,obviously, zeroed it to our crappy out dated and shallow education systems. So back to the question, with a hint of my back ground, which is the best way to convincingly answer that question? I really appreciate you taking the time to respond to thisRegards Douglas

Nina Sankovitch: Friendkeeping: A Primer

Friendkeeping by Julie Klam is the book you will want to give all your best friends, not as a nudge-nudge, hint-hint reminder of what it takes to be a good friend, but rather as a celebration of just how great friends can be. And if they (or you) pick up a few hints on how to be a good friend, so much the better for everyone. We all need reminding once in awhile that connection takes more than just showing up for drinks or a walk -- and Klam offers the reminders with her usual big heart, goofy humor, and open admissions.

Klam tackles the big issues of jealousy within friendship (likening it to Kuato from the movie Total Recall - an ugly little creature that lives in her belly and rears his schadenfreude head from time to time); what happens when you love a friend but hate his/her parnter (we have all been there); sharing (despite being a memoirist Klam admits that for years she couldn't talk about her troubles with friends, either in her own life or with them. Now she understands the two-way street of sharing is vital to a good friendship -- but even then, she also understand there are situations when you are there just to listen); and how to let go of friends that just are not right for you (for Julie, the deal breaker was taking a dog out for a walk without a leash -- IN NYC!).

Klam also takes on, with wit and grace, the even bigger friendship issues of illness, depression, and distance: those moments (or years) in friendship when more effort, understanding, and love is required. You can do it, Klam urges us all, and with her coaching, she is right: we can.

Russian anti-Putin opposition leader charged with plotting riots

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian investigators on Friday charged an outspoken opponent of President Vladimir Putin with plotting riots - allegedly after conspiring with a Georgian politician - in a case rights activists say is designed to suppress dissent.

The federal Investigative Committee formally charged Sergei Udaltsov after questioning him about allegations based on hidden-camera footage broadcast by a pro-Kremlin channel that said it showed him conspiring with a Georgian politician.

Udaltsov, who was released after being charged, but faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted, denied the allegations. "I repeated that I did not plan, prepare or organize mass riots - I am a supporter of peaceful mass protests," he said.

Kremlin critics say the case is emblematic of a clampdown on dissent since Putin started a new six-year term in May amid a series of protests against his rule.

"I think this is part of a plan readied long ago to quell the protest wave," said veteran human rights activist Lyudmila Alexeyeva. "The tightening of screws is continuing: the planned annihilation of the opposition."

Udaltsov was ordered to remain in Moscow pending further investigation. Two lesser-known activists charged in the same case have been arrested, including Leonid Razvozzhayev, who said he was abducted in Ukraine last week and tortured. He has formally retracted his confession, his lawyer Mark Feigin said on Thursday.

Several people gathered outside the Investigative Committee building in Moscow to support Udaltsov. One held a banner reading: "I demand an end to repression and torture".

On his arrival at the building for questioning, Udaltsov raised clenched fists in a symbol of strength and victory.

He was one of the leaders of a series of protests prompted by allegations of fraud in a December 2011 parliamentary election won by Putin's ruling United Russia party.

The protests drew tens of thousands of people into the streets of Moscow, underscoring dismay among some Russians with Putin's nearly 13-year rule, but the opposition has since then failed to make inroads into the former KGB spy's grip on power.

Putin's critics say he has used new laws and criminal cases to quash dissent since his inauguration.

Several people face potential prison sentences over violence that erupted between police and protesters at a rally the day before Putin's inauguration on May 7.

Another protest leader, Alexei Navalny, could be jailed for 10 years in a separate case on financial-crimes charges he says are politically motivated.

Putin has signed laws increasing fines for violations at street demonstrations and tightening controls on foreign-funded non-governmental organizations that Russia accuses of meddling in its domestic politics.

"We sense some hysteria at the top," said Alexeyeva, 85, a Soviet-era dissident.

"They don't know a way to silence dissent other than to threaten people by coming up with more and more new legal bans and limitations. Soon they will ban us from breathing."

Cultural historian, author Jacques Barzun dies

Jacques Barzun, a pioneering cultural historian, reigning public intellectual and longtime Ivy League professor who became a best-selling author in his 90s with the acclaimed "From Dawn to Decadence," has died. He was 104.

Barzun, who taught for nearly 50 years at Columbia University, passed away Thursday evening in San Antonio, where he had lived in recent years, his son-in-law Gavin Parfit said.

Praised by Cynthia Ozick as among "the last of the thoroughgoing generalists," the tall, courtly Barzun wrote dozens of books and essays on everything from philosophy and music to baseball and detective novels.

In 2000, he capped his career with "From Dawn to Decadence," a survey of Western civilization from the Renaissance to the end of the 20th century. The length topped 800 pages, and the theme was uninspiring ? the collapse of traditions in modern times ? yet it received wide acclaim from reviewers, stayed on best-seller lists for months and was nominated for the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle prize.

Even the Rolling Stones' Keith Richards said he was reading it.

"The whole thing is a surprise, because scholarship is not exactly the thing people run after these days, or perhaps at any time," Barzun told The Associated Press in 2000.

Along with Lionel Trilling, Dwight Macdonald and others, the French immigrant was a prominent thinker during the Cold War era, making occasional television appearances and even appearing in 1956 on the cover of Time magazine, which cited him as representing "a growing host of men of ideas who not only have the respect of the nation, but who return the compliment."

In 2003, President Bush awarded him a Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor, praising Barzun as "a thinker of great discernment and integrity. ... Few academics of the last century have equaled his output and his influence." In 2010, he received a National Humanities Medal.

Barzun had first-hand knowledge of much of the 20th century and second-hand knowledge of a good part of the 19th century. His great-grandmother, born in 1830, would give him chocolate and tell him stories, an experience that helped inspire him to become a historian.

A scholar's son, Barzun was born in Creteil, France in 1907 and grew up in a household where Modernism was the great subject and visitors included Jean Cocteau, Ezra Pound and Guillame Apollinaire, upon whose knee he once sat. But World War I drove the family out of the country and across the ocean to the United States.

"The outbreak of war in August 1914 and the nightmare that ensued put an end to all innocent joys and assumptions," Barzun later wrote. "By the age of ten ? as I was later told ? my words and attitudes betrayed suicidal thoughts; it appeared that I was 'ashamed' to be still alive."

Reading consoled him, especially "Hamlet," but he never recovered his early "zest for life." In 1990, he defined himself as a "spirited" pessimist, explaining that he retained a "vivid sight of an earlier world, soon followed by its collapse in wretchedness and folly."

Having learned English in part by reading James Fenimore Cooper, Barzun entered Columbia as an undergraduate at age 15 and was in his early 20s when the school hired him as an instructor in the history department. He remained with Columbia until his retirement, in 1975, and would be long remembered for the "Colloquium on Important Books" he taught with Trilling, with one former student calling Barzun "a towering charismatic figure who aroused the kind of fierce loyalties that the medieval masters must have."

Allen Ginsberg, another Barzun student, once joked that his former professor was a master of "politeness."

Barzun's greatest influence was on the writing of cultural history; he helped invent it. As a student at Columbia he was among the first to integrate the narration of wars and government with the evolution of art, science, education and fashion.

"It was partly my upbringing, being among a group of artists of every kind," he told the AP. "When I became interested in history, it seemed that social and cultural elements were perfectly real things that existed as forces. Diplomacy and force of arms were treated as the substance of history, and there was this other realm missing."

"From Dawn to Decadence," summing up a lifetime of thinking, offered a rounded, leisurely and conservative tour of Western civilization, with numerous digressions printed in the margins. Barzun guided readers from the religious debates of the Reformation to the contemporary debates on beliefs of any kind.

"Distrust (was) attached to anything that retained a shadow of authoritativeness ? old people, old ideas, old conceptions of what a leader or a teacher might do," he wrote of the late 20th century.

Barzun told the AP in 2003 that he remembered coming to the United States after World War I and finding a country that lived up to its own happy, informal reputation. "It was openhearted, amiable and courteous in manner, ready to try anything new," he said. "But many of those things have gone to pieces, for understandable reasons."

He contributed to such magazines as Harper's and The New Republic and he published more than 30 books, notably "Teacher in America," a classic analysis of education and culture. In the early 1950s, he and Trilling helped found the Readers' Subscription Book Club, a highbrow response to the Book-of-the-Month Club that lasted 12 years.

Barzun also edited many books, including a compilation of short detective stories, and wrote a memorable essay on baseball, in which he advised that "Whoever wants to know the heart and mind of America had better learn baseball." Those words eventually made it to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y., for which Barzun later autographed a bat celebrating his 100th birthday.

Barzun had three children with his first wife, Marianna Lowell, who died in 1978. He married Marguerite Davenport two years later. He also is survived by 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, according to his daughter, Isabel Barzun.

"He was a gentleman. He was a scholar. He was refined, he was kind. He was enormously generous in spirit," said Parfit, his son-in-law. "He was one of a kind."

Why Apple priced the iPad Mini at $329

    1 hr.

If Apple had popped a $249 iPad Mini, the thing would have swept down from Mount Cupertino and set fire to every competitor with its fiery breath. If Apple had gone with a $299 iPad Mini, the devastation would still have been gnarly. At $329, the iPad Mini will have no shortage of buyers, but Apple leaves open an argument for a $199 non-Apple tablet. So why did Apple price it so high?

For starters, Apple is about profit. In the computer, phone and tablet businesses, Apple's competitors whittle away their pricing until they're making little or no money, because they believe they'll gain market share.?

Apple keeps prices competitive, but only to a point. There's no $499 Apple laptop, although plenty of Dells and HPs regularly start that low. Ditto for desktop computers, where Apple's idea of a deal is the $599 Mac Mini.

The iPad Mini is $329 because that's exactly what the highly paid bean counters at Apple calculated would be the highest price possible that would still sell. It may one day go down???in fact, I would say the price has to drop by Christmas 2013, if not sooner. But while you can always lower prices, it's a lot harder to raise them later on. Apple always starts at the top.

So while it was foolish for me to even think Apple would price competitively, I was surprised, because now there's a new conundrum: Do you buy an iPad Mini for $329, or go just $70 more?for a full-fledged iPad 2? This struck me as tight spacing, until I realized the bigger point: Apple doesn't think you will confuse a 7.9-inch tablet with a 9.7-inch tablet.

You know from the pictures that they're quite different in size, but holding them, you realize that their uses really are different. If you are in the market for something to use for sketching and text documents and spreadsheets, maybe even accompany it with a Bluetooth keyboard or whatever, then heck yes, you will pick the iPad 2 (or a newer?model).?

But if you just want something to read books on, and watch some shows and maybe surf the Web, then you are actually more INTERESTED in a smaller iPad, and won't think too hard about what $70 more gets you in terms of screen surface area.

That brings us back to square one, however: Apple is trying to convince us of separate uses for large and small iPads, but is trying to differentiate its product from the competition by price. Riddle me that, Avi Greengart, research director for consumer devices at Current Analysis:

"The price doesn't reduce the purchase case for some of the cheaper tablets," he told me when I saw him at the Apple event. "But this one stands above them." He smiled and added, "besides, compared to the Nexus 7, the design is so much nicer."

For people who aren't buying because of?design (and there are many), Greengart contends that the universe of apps available for the iPad ? 275,000 made expressly for that tablet, according to Apple CEO Tim Cook ? means that any tablet bearing the Apple logo is simply going to be more useful. "The iPad Mini is far more versatile" than its competitors, says Greengart. "It costs more but it's worth more."

For a final thought, I turned to my friends on Twitter, with the simple question: "Do you think the $329 iPad Mini is a) a steal b) priced just right or c) crazy expensive?"

From self-described "major Apple fanboy" @jasonwal, I got "a little high." Another instapundit, @weatherninja, said that "a $299.00 price tag would have been a better value," and that $329 means he may in fact go $70 more for the full-size iPad 2. @seanethompson seems to have been thinking along the same lines as me, calling the price "more expensive than most consumers would like, but in the ballpark given component costs and great user experience." Other responses?ranged from expensive to crazy expensive. "I'm curious on the profit margin," wrote @gevans. "I bet it's at least 40 percent."

Whatever the real percentage, I think @gevans may be onto something.?Apple products can be priced as high as the company wants, as long as people buy every product that gets made, and that hasn't seemed to be a problem of late. And as competitive as Apple is, a side effect of iPad-onomics is that there's room for more affordable options at the bottom of the pricing ladder. At least until that price drops to $299, or $249, and the villagers run for cover.
