Greenville County jail officials said the 42-year-old, whose real name is Earl Simmons, was arrested early Friday. He was also charged with not having a driver's license.

This was not Simmons first run in with the law.

Simmons was arrested last year in nearby Spartanburg County for suspicion of driving without a license. In that case, he was released after paying a fine.

Jail records show Simmons has been released. It wasn't clear if he has an attorney.

Simmons was arrested in a Phoenix suburb in 2011 after a trooper clocked him driving at 102 mph. He admitted to speeding but not going as fast as the Arizona police said. He sued the Arizona police.

In March 2000, DMX was arrested in Cheektowaga, New York. He pled guilty to a reduced charge of driving without a license, and was sentenced to 15 days in jail and fined $400. DMX served another jail sentence in 2001 for driving without a license and possession of marijuana. In 2008. DMX pled guilty to charges of drug possession, theft, and animal cruelty. He was sentenced to ninety days in jail on January 31, 2009. In 2010, DMX turned himself in to the Los Angeles Metropolitan Court for a reckless driving charge, he received in 2002. He was sentenced to serve ninety days in jail.

Florida shooting: Neighbors describe different sides of gunman

HIALEAH, Fla. (AP) - The gunman who went on a shooting rampage at a South Florida apartment complex was described as a quiet man who took his mother to doctor appointments, yet also someone who was known for getting into fights and yelling at his mom.

The conflicting portrayals of Pedro Vargas, 42, emerged as police tried to piece together why he set ablaze the apartment he lived in with his mother and then killed six people before police fatally shot him.

As the eight-hour standoff unfolded, horrified residents hunkered down in their homes, at times so close to the action that they could feel the gunfire or hear negotiations between the gunman and police, authorities and witnesses said Saturday.

As the rampaged winded down, Vargas held two people hostage at gunpoint for up to three hours in their apartment until a SWAT team entered and killed him, police said. The hostages were not hurt.

"Nobody seems to know why he acted the way he acted," said Lt. Carl Zogby, a spokesman with the Hialeah Police Department.

Detectives were investigating whether Vargas had any ongoing disputes with the building manager, as some residents believed. His mother was not home at the time of the shootings.

"He was a good son," said Ester Lazcano, who lived on the same floor as Vargas and his mother. "He'd take her in the morning to run errands" and to doctor appointments.

Lazcano said she was in the shower when she heard the first shots, and then there were at least a dozen more. "I felt the shots," she said.

Miriam Valdes, 70, was in a friend's apartment two doors down. She said she heard officers trying to convince Vargas to surrender.

She said the gunman first asked for his girlfriend and then his mother but refused to cooperate.

Valdes said Vargas was also known as a difficult person who sometimes got into fights and yelled at his mother.

"He was a very abusive person," she said. "He didn't have any friends there."

Police were called to the aging, five-story apartment building in Hialeah, a working class suburb a few miles northwest of downtown Miami, on Friday at 6:30 p.m. The first calls reported a fire, but when firefighters arrived, they heard shots and notified police, Zogby said.

Vargas, who has no known criminal record, set a combustible liquid on fire in his fourth-floor apartment. Building manager Italo Pisciotti, 79, and his wife, Camira Pisciotti, 69, saw smoke and ran to the unit, Zogby said. When they arrived, Vargas opened the door and fired, killing both.

Vargas then went back into his burning apartment and fired 10 to 20 shots from a 9mm pistol into the street. One of the bullets struck 33-year-old Carlos Javier Gavilanes, who was parking his car after returning home from work. Zogby said his body was found next to his vehicle.

The gunman then kicked his way into a third-floor apartment, where he shot to death Patricio Simono, 54; his wife Merly Niebles, 51; and their 17-year-old daughter. Family members said Simono worked at a car wash and Niebles cleaned hotel rooms. Their daughter wanted to be a nurse.

Agustin Hernandez, Niebles' brother-in-law, loaded several old pictures and other items from his relative's apartment in a grocery cart and into his car. One showed his teenage niece smiling in a red graduation gown. Another pictured his sister-in-law posing in a white dress and pearls.

A binder also from the apartment had pop artist Justin Beiber's name on the spine, presumably belonging to the teenage girl, who family members identified as Priscilla Perez.

Marcela Chavarri, director of the American Christian School, said the Perez was about to enter her senior year.

"She was a lovely girl," Chavarri said through tears. "She was always happy and helping her classmates."

All six people were killed in a short time span, Zogby said, and it's possible they were all dead by the time police arrived.

Officers and Vargas then engaged in an hours-long shootout and chase, with police following the gunman from one floor to the next.

"He kept running from us as he fired at us and we fired at him," Zogby said.

Several hours into the ordeal, Vargas forced his way into a fifth-story unit and held two people captive. Sgt. Eddie Rodriguez said negotiators and a SWAT team tried talking with him from the other side of the door.

Rodriguez said the talks eventually "just fell apart." Officers stormed the building, fatally shooting the gunman in an exchange of gunfire. Zogby said Vargas still had several rounds of ammunition when he was killed.

"He was ready to fight," Zogby said.

Parents behaving badly in youth sports - shame, shame

In the two years since my youngest left for college, taking both cheer and mayhem in his luggage, there are a few cherished things I have missed. The same longing holds true for his older brother, who, I hope, is also shoulder-high in books and classes.

I miss their friends. Their boisterous entries and departures. Their music. The anticipation before one of their high school football games. The way they simplified the strange, new world of technology for their clueless mother.

What I don?t miss? The ridiculous, over-the top behavior of other sports parents, adults who acted like bullies, who flipped enthusiasm into a soul-crushing sickness.

The latest incident, one that is as confusing as it is horrid, involves a Miami soccer team that played an Orlando squad in a championship match of the Disney Cup International Youth Soccer Tournament at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. Though the match was played last weekend and the ensuing fracas was covered by the media, the truth of what happened has remained elusive, with conflicting stories from each side.

Both teams, however, agree on one fact: Parents participated in the melee. Which team?s parents ? Orlando?s or Miami?s ? remains undetermined.

According to the Orlando team, its goalkeeper was pummeled by two or three Miami players, who had just lost a hard-fought game. Matthew Feinberg, the parent of the 16-year-old goalie, says his son was treated at a hospital for a concussion and other injuries. Feinberg described the fight as ?a riot? to an Orlando Sentinel reporter.

?What made this insane was that the parents cleared the bench,? he said. ?The parents on their team helped their children. They even hit some kids on our team.?

Feinberg claims an Orlando grandparent was punched in the chest and his pacemaker turned off.

Exaggeration? Who knows? An Osceola County Sheriff?s Office spokeswoman said her office didn?t have any evidence that the incident approximated anything close to a riot.

Interviewed by Miami?s NBC station, WTVJ/Channel 6, the Miami team had a different version of events. It was one of their players who, having dropped to the ground to cry over the defeat, was kicked repeatedly by the Orlando goalie, they claimed. Miami?s center back, Jesus Albornoz, sported a swollen eye and a scratch on the side of his face. On camera he said he hit an adult only after that man, an Orlando supporter, struck him.

The sheriff and state attorney, who are investigating the incident, have their job cut out for them. Rabid parents, whether from Miami, Orlando or Seattle, are notoriously bad and biased witnesses.

Sad to say, parents behaving badly transcends sports and generations, even gender. I spent thousands of hours in the bleachers while raising five sports-crazed children, and though nastiness was not an every-game occurrence, it was common enough to warrant endless pre-season meetings by league officials who were desperate to cajole adults to act like ? well, like adults, like role models. Despite these pleas, a loose cannon invariably shot off at some point in the season.

A parent who cussed at the ref. Who belittled an opposing team player. Who ran onto the field after a bad call. Who was ejected by an umpire. Who threw a punch at another parent.

These crazy parents turned what should have been a fun event into an embarrassing spectacle. Too bad they?re still around, ruining things for others.

Nora Collins confidently opens for Josh Turner at Washington County Fair (Photos)

Singer Songwriter Nora Collins rose to the occasion as Josh Turner's opening act at the Washington County Fair last night and, uplifted by the event, handed in a nearly flawless performance. Taking the stage at 6:00pm July 25 to a large gathering crowd, Collins, a rising country starlet, played seven songs in her half hour time slot and made the most of her stage time by performing some of her absolutely best material. Collins picked up her Martin guitar and got things underway by performing the Pistol Annies, song "I Feel A Sin Comin' On," and the confidence in her voice and guitar was immediately obvious.

"); }

"Harley," was played next, a song Collins wrote and the first song on her brand new CD, "Only The Beginning." It's a smartly written tune that finds Collins singing about a taking a late night ride in a sleepy town on the back of a Harley. The audience clearly enjoyed her performance and Collins was all smiles as the song came to a close, clearly basking in the joy of her big moment in the spotlight.

Up next was "Dimples Filled With Lies," a song that has garnered national attention for Collins via The Country Network, now called ZUUS Country, located at channel 24.2 in Milwaukee or 988 on Time Warner Cable. "Dimples," was recorded in Nashville with musicians that tour with Keith Urban, Lady Antebellum, Darius Rucker and Martina McBride, and can be found on Nora's second CD, "Run Away With Me," a disc full of songs that Collins wrote herself when she was 15 to 16 years old. "Fishin' In The Dark," by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band came next in the set list. Nora really nails this song, and the version she played last night was no exception. It's a playful song, catchy and memorable, to say the least.

Collins returned to playing original songs by performing, "Nothing To Do With Me," a track co-written with Kevan Kirk, that has for me become the stand out tune on "Only The Beginning." Nora really hits the mark with this song in particular. Collins has a way of painting the song beautifully with a wide palette of emotions that draws you in as a listener and demands your full attention. The song, without becoming too esoteric in my opinion, touches upon a magic songwriting formula that borders on musical alchemy. Collins defines this era of her song crafting with "Nothing To Do With Me," and her performance last night displayed the breadth and charm of her young, raw talent.

"I'll Pray For You," another original tune written by Collins, was up next on the set list. Nora absolutely owned the stage during the performance. It's a song that gives Nora the space to stretch her vocals and guitar, all the while delivering an intriguing storyline of love gone wrong. Collins delivers lines that are both humorous and profound, proclaiming at one point, "And even though you've been quite the jerk, well I'll let karma do my dirty work. I don't want your blood on my hands."

Nora closed out her set with Miranda Lambert's song, "Fastest Girl In Town." Collins does the song justice and then some, not afraid to fill the big notes the song demands. At the end of her set Nora gave everyone a chuckle when in good-natured fun she joked from the stage, "I'd like to thank Josh Turner for closing for me tonight." It was one of those moments where you couldn't help but smile and be proud for an up and coming musician who just had a bright and beautiful moment basking in the spotlight at a big gig.

By the end of the show Nora had most definitely won over new fans who flocked to her at the merch tent to pick up a CD and take a photo with the rising star. It was really great to see Nora interact with her fans, signing autographs and smiling, giving each one of them a great memory to take home with them. "Only The Beginning," is only going to be made available at Nora's shows or through US mail, get your copy now. For the mailing address and more information and her performance schedule check out www.NoraCollins.com. For those who want to sample Nora's music there is a free download through ReverbNation. The track is a full band version of "I'll Pray For You" that can be downloaded after you sign up for Nora's mailing list. Nora is in the process of making a music video for the full band version of "I'll Pray For You," be sure to check back for the finished video. I learned my lesson when iPad 3 came out; that was a waste of 5 hours. I expect the iPhone 5s to be the same unless they purposely don?t build enough to hype demand. Makes sense for them to do so after they purchased they own stocks yesterday.

Feds ban some Medicare providers in crackdown

MIAMI (AP) ? For the first time in history, federal health officials said Friday they will ban certain types of Medicare and Medicaid providers in three high-fraud cities from enrolling in the taxpayer-funded programs for the poor as part of an effort to prevent scams.

The strict moratoriums, which start Tuesday, give federal health officials unprecedented power to choose any region and industry with high fraud activity and ban new Medicare and Medicaid providers from joining the programs for six months. They wouldn't ban existing providers.

The administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services said the agency is targeting providers of home health care in eight counties in the Miami and Chicago areas. All ambulance providers would be banned in eight counties in the Houston area.

"We fully support the action taken," said Val J. Halamandaris, president, National Association for Home Care & Hospice.

"NAHC has long supported program integrity measures such as this and strongly recommended that Congress give CMS the authority to issue a moratorium as part of the Affordable Care Act. We look forward to continue working with CMS as it considers other areas of the country where a moratorium may be needed," Halamandaris said.

The moratorium, which was first reported by The Associated Press, will also extend to Children's Health Insurance Program providers in the same areas, agency administrator Marilyn Tavenner said in a statement.

It's unclear how many providers will be shut out of the programs.

There were 662 home health agencies in Miami-Dade in 2012 and the ratio of home health agencies to Medicare beneficiaries was 1,960 percent greater in Miami Dade County than other counties, according to figures from federal health officials.

South Florida, long known as ground-zero for Medicare fraud, has also had several high profile prosecutions involving that industry.

In February, the owners and operators of two Miami home health agencies were sentenced for their participation in a $48 million Medicare fraud scheme.

The number of home health providers in Cook County, Ill., increased from 301 to 509 between 2008 and 2012. There were 275 ambulance suppliers in Harris County, Texas, in 2012. The ratio of providers to patients in both regions was also several hundred times greater than in other counties, federal health officials said.

Top Senate Republicans have criticized the agency for not using the powerful moratoriums sooner as a tool to combat an estimated $60 billion a year in Medicare fraud. Senators Chuck Grassley, who is the ranking Republican on the Judiciary Committee, and Orrin Hatch, who is the ranking Republican on the Finance Committee, sent a letter to federal health officials in 2011 urging them to use the bans.

"While it's certainly better late than never, it's unfortunate that it took CMS three years to use the tools it's had to protect seniors," Hatch said in a statement Friday, adding he hoped "to see more action like this."

Officials for the Department of Health and Services inspector general lobbied hard to ensure moratorium power was included under the Affordable Care Act as the Obama administration focuses on cleaning up fraud on the front end by preventing crooks from getting into the program in the first place.

"There's no shortage of bad actors to defraud the taxpayers, and the number gets bigger all the time, so it's good to see the administration at last using this new tool to fight fraud," Grassley said in a statement.

In the past, federal health officials tried to stall new provider applications from being processed, hoping to slow the number flocking to high-fraud sectors. But when providers inevitably complained, the agency had to process their paperwork.

The federal agency can also revoke the IDs of suspicious providers, but those are temporary and many companies are able to reenroll later or enroll under a different name.

Federal health officials have been reluctant to use one of its most powerful new tools, worrying moratoriums may harm legitimate providers and hamper patients' access to care. Tavenner said in the statement that would not happen, but the agency didn't elaborate. Agency officials said they intend to consider other moratoriums in different industries in other cities going forward.

The ability to target certain industries and cities is especially helpful as Medicare fraud has morphed into complex schemes over the years, moving from medical equipment and HIV infusion fraud to ambulance scams, as crooks try to stay one step ahead of authorities. Fraudsters have also spread out across the country, bringing their scams to new cities once authorities catch onto them.

The scams have also grown more sophisticated, using recruiters who are paid kickbacks for finding patients, while doctors, nurses and company owners coordinate to appear to deliver medical services that they are not.

The moratoriums come as budget cuts are forcing federal health officials to retract its watchdog arm as it launches its largest health care expansion since the Medicare program.

Health and Human Services inspector general officials said they are in the process of cutting 20 percent of its staff, from 1,800 at its peak to 1,400, and cancelling several high profile projects, including an audit that would have investigated technology security in the federal and state health exchanges launching in October. The project was slated to examine issue including whether patient information was secure from hackers on the online marketplace, where individuals and small businesses can shop for health insurance.

Defoe hits hat-trick as Spurs slam six past South China in Bale?s absence

Friendly: Tottenham 6 South China 0

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

Gareth Bale was again missing as Jermain Defoe grabbed a hat-trick in Tottenham?s comfortable Barclays Asia Trophy win over South China in Hong Kong.

Bale?s future has been the subject of intense scrutinty in recent days, with Real Madrid obviously keen to sign the Wales star.

But his absence this evening had been predicted as Andre Villas-Boas confirmed yesterday Bale was still struggling to shake off a buttock injury.

In his absence, Tottenham cruised home on a pitch that looked more like an aquatics centre at times.

Manchester United have to play here on Monday, although at least there was no rain as the Red Devils coaching staff, including David Moyes and Ryan Giggs, saw Defoe profit from some woeful defending, Tottenham also netting through a Tse Sean Ka Keung own goal, a close-range effort from Clint Dempsey and Andros Townsend?s late strike.

Prior to tonight, this has not been the greatest of trips for Tottenham.

What with the speculation over Bale?s future, the injury to Jan Vertonghen and concerns over the pitch so great Andre Villas-Boas would have been happy for the game to be called off, Spurs will probably be glad to get on the plane home.

They left with a flourish though, completely outclassing a South China outfit who had run Manchester City close on Wednesday.

By half-time, Tottenham had three goals and could well have scored twice as many.

Clint Dempsey fired over after being sent clean through by Scott Parker, Defoe hit a post and also had a close-range effort saved by Zhang Chunhui.

In addition, referee Neil Swarbrick inexplicably failed to award a penalty when Kyle Walker was blatantly taken out by Joel Bertoli Padiha.

It meant Tottenham had to settle for just three, the first of which came when Tse Sean Ka Keung turned Danny Rose?s shot into his own net.

Dempsey then tucked home Defoe?s cut-back before the England striker got one himself after Kyle Walker?s long-range free-kick was deflected into his path.

Defoe probably scored the easiest goal of his entire career 10 minutes after the re-start when Zhang rolled an attempted clearance straight to him.

With a gaping goal to aim at, Defoe was not likely to miss.

And his hat-trick duly arrived when the South China defence disintegrated once more and Andros Townsend completed the rout late on.

Apple's smartphone market share slips

A new report shows that Apple's share of the global smartphone market fell during the second quarter to its lowest level in four years.

Apple had 13.1 percent of the worldwide market, ABI Research said Friday, down from 16.6 percent a year ago. That's the lowest level since the third quarter of 2009, two years after the launch of the first iPhone.

Apple sold 31.2 million iPhones in the April-to-June period, according to ABI, up from 26 million in the same period a year ago. But the company's sales growth isn't keeping pace with the overall smartphone market, which grew 52 percent from last year.

Samsung, the world's largest maker of smartphones, also saw a drop in market share.

Covenant Relationships: The Five Love Languages -A review

This is one of the most intellectually sound books ever written for couples, by one of the greatest marriage counselors (or shall I say consultants?) of our time.

If you communicate love one way, but your spouse receives and feels loved in a completely opposite way there are likely to be many misunderstandings and hurt feelings between you. He always tells you how pretty you are and how he loves the way you think, but you feel more loved when he gets you a gift. So, he feels he is showing you love, but you don?t feel much love at all. It could be vice versa; you think that spending time with him will make him feel loved but he prefers words of affirmation.?

The 5 Love Languages? are broken down into the following categories: Words of Affirmation, Quality Time, Receiving Gifts, Acts of Service, and Physical Touch. It can take time to figure out what your own love language is and what your spouse?s is. And even when you know, it can also take practice to use the love languages.

I discovered my love language was acts of service. If my husband did something kind for me it would linger on in my mind much longer than if he bought me a gift or complemented me. If I was really tied and I got into the kitchen and found out he had washed the dishes or done the laundry I would feel so loved. The problem was, I would always go with ? love others as you love yourself? but he didn?t really appreciate being loved that way as much as I did.?

Realistically speaking, all of the love languages are important at different times. For example, receiving gifts isn?t top on my list but if I didn?t get a gift on my birthday I would be upset. And while verbal affirmation isn?t top on my list either, it sure means a lot when I?m all dressed up for an outing and he tells me Im beautiful.. The importance of each love language can move around on your list but we all have one or more that is continually most important to us.

Take some time to think about what is important to you and to identify your spouse's love language as well. Talk about it, get on the same page and learn how to use the love languages to regularly honor and bless your spouse. I suggest couples read this during courtship in order to understand how to please each other more after marriage.

(Santa Barbara, Calif.) Though humans generally have a tendency to look at a region just below the eyes and above the nose toward the midline when first identifying another person, a small subset of people tend to look further down at the tip of the nose, for instance, or at the mouth. However, as UC Santa Barbara researchers Miguel Eckstein and Matthew Peterson recently discovered, "nose lookers" and "mouth lookers" can do just as well as everyone else when it comes to the split-second decision-making that goes into identifying someone. Their findings are in a recent issue of the journal Psychological Science.

"It was a surprise to us," said Eckstein, professor in the Department of Psychological & Brain Sciences, of the ability of that subset of "nose lookers" and "mouth lookers" to identify faces. In a previous study, he and postdoctoral researcher Peterson established through tests involving a series of face images and eye-tracking software that most humans tend to look just below the eyes when identifying another human being and when forced to look somewhere else, like the mouth, their face identification accuracy suffers.

The reason we look where we look, said the researchers, is evolutionary. With survival at stake and only a limited amount of time to assess who an individual might be, humans have developed the ability to make snap judgments by glancing at a place on the face that allows the observer's eye to gather a massive amount of information, from the finer features around the eyes to the larger features of the mouth. In 200 milliseconds, we can tell whether another human being is friend, foe, or potential mate. The process is deceptively easy and seemingly negligible in its quickness: Identifying another individual is an activity on which we embark virtually from birth, and is crucial to everything from day-to-day social interaction to life-or-death situations. Thus, our brain devotes specialized circuitry to face recognition.

"One of, if not the most, difficult task you can do with the human face is to actually identify it," said Peterson, explaining that each time we look at someone's face, it's a little different perhaps the angle, or the lighting, or the face itself has changed and our brains constantly work to associate the current image with previously remembered images of that face, or faces like it, in a continuous process of recognition. Computer vision has nowhere near that capacity in identifying faces, yet.

So it would seem to follow that those who look at other parts of a person's face might perform less well, and might be slower to recognize potential threats, or opportunities.

Or so the researchers thought. In a series of tests involving face identification tasks, the researchers found a small group that departed from the typical just-below-the-eyes gaze. The observers were Caucasian, had normal or corrected to normal vision, and no history of neurological disorders all qualities which controlled for cultural, physical, or neurological elements that could influence a person's gaze.

But instead of performing less well, as would have been predicted by the theoretical analysis of the investigators, the participants were still able to identify faces with the same degree of accuracy as just-below-the-eyes lookers. Furthermore, when these nose-looking participants were forced to look at the eyes to do the identification, their accuracy degraded.

The findings both fascinate and set up a chicken-and-egg scenario for the researchers. One possibility is that people tailor their eye movement to the properties of their visual system everything from their eye structures to the brain functions they are born with and develop. If, for example, one is able to see well in the upper visual field (the region above where they look), they can afford to look lower on the face without losing the detail around the eyes when identifying someone. According to Eckstein, it is known that most humans tend to see better in the lower visual field.

The other possibility is the reverse that our visual systems adapt to our looking behavior. If at an early age a person developed the habit of looking lower on the face to identify someone else, their visual system over time brain circuits specialized for face identification could develop and arrange itself around that tendency.

"The main finding is that people develop distinct optimal face-looking strategies that maximize face identification accuracy," said Peterson. "In our framework, an optimized strategy or behavior is one that results in maximized performance. Thus, when we say that the observer-looking behavior was self-optimal, it refers to each individual fixating on locations that maximize their identification accuracy."

Future research will delve deeper into the mechanisms involved in those who look lower on the face to determine what could drive that gaze pattern and what information is gathered.

    Jimmy Fallon is a dad.

The royal baby isn't the only famous newborn out there. "Late Night" host Jimmy Fallon and wife Nancy Juvonen Fallon welcomed a baby girl Tuesday, People magazine reports.

The couple is "overjoyed about the arrival of their beautiful daughter," their representative told People.

The Fallon baby arrived on the scene just one day after Prince William and wife Catherine welcomed a boy.

As with the royal bundle of joy, no name has been announced for the Fallon baby either.

While Fallon hasn't commented on his child yet, he tweeted on Monday about the royal arrival, writing, "Kate Middleton went into labor this morning. When the rest of the royal family heard, they said, 'Oh my God -- what's 'labor'?"

The prolonged heat wave that has bathed the UK in sunshine over the past month has given the country an unexpected taste of summer that has seemed to be missing in recent years.

However, a new study published today, 24 July, in IOP Publishing's Environmental Research Letters, has provided warnings that will chime with those accustomed to more typical British weather.

According to the study, winter flooding in the UK is set to get more severe and more frequent under the influence of climate change as a result of a change in the characteristics of atmospheric rivers (ARs).

ARs are narrow regions of intense moisture flows in the lower troposphere of the atmosphere that deliver sustained and heavy rainfall to mid-latitude regions such as the UK.

They are responsible for many of the largest winter floods in the mid-latitudes and can carry extremely large amounts of water: the AR responsible for flooding in the northwest of the UK in 2009 transported 4500 times more water than the average flow in the River Thames in London.

The researchers, from the University of Reading and University of Iowa, found that large parts of the projected changes in AR frequency and intensity would be down to thermodynamic changes in the atmosphere, rather than the natural variability of the climate, suggesting that it is a response to anthropogenic climate change.

To reach these conclusions, the researchers used simulations from five state-of-the-art climate models to investigate how the characteristics of ARs may change under future climate change scenarios.

Firstly, they used the climate models to see how accurately they could simulate the ARs that occurred between 1980 and 2005. The five models did this successfully and were deemed capable of projecting how future ARs will develop under different scenarios.

The models were then used to simulate future conditions under two scenarios RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 that represent different, yet equally plausible, scenarios for future increases in greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere. They projected changes that would occur between 2074 and 2099.

Each of the five models simulated an increase in AR frequency. For the RCP8.5 projections, which represents stronger increases in greenhouse gas concentrations than RCP4.5, there was a striking level of consistency in the magnitude of change in AR frequency all models showed an approximate doubling of the number of future ARs compared to the simulations for 1980 2005.

The models also projected an increase in intensity of the ARs, meaning an AR impacting the UK in the future is projected to deliver more moisture, potentially causing larger precipitation totals.

Lead author of the research, Dr David Lavers, said: "ARs could become stronger in terms of their moisture transport. In a warming world, atmospheric water vapour content is expected to rise due to an increase in saturation water vapour pressure with air temperature. This is likely to result in increased water vapour transport.

"The link between ARs and flooding is already well established, so an increase in AR frequency is likely to lead an increased number of heavy winter rainfall events and floods. More intense ARs are likely to lead to higher rainfall totals, and thus larger flood events."

"The link between ARs and flooding is already well established, so an increase in AR frequency is likely to lead an increased number of heavy winter rainfall events and floods. More intense ARs are likely to lead to higher rainfall totals, and thus larger flood events."
