Skoda aims to win younger buyers with the Rapid Spaceback, a new compact car that will compete against vehicles such as the VW Golf and Ford Focus.

The Rapid Spaceback is a shorter and more sporty-looking variant of the Rapid notchback, which is already on sale.

Skoda said the Rapid Spaceback has a more dynamic design and more customization options to appeal to a younger customer group.

"The new Rapid Spaceback is a milestone for Skoda. It means that we are entering the strategically important segment of compact hatchback models," Skoda CEO Winfried Vahland said in a statement.

The Rapid Spaceback?s tail end features clear lines that create a balanced and uncluttered impression, Skoda says.

At 4300mm, the Rapid Spaceback is 180mm shorter than the Rapid notchback. Its shorter rear overhang reduces cargo volume to 415 liters, which is 135 liters less than the notchback. With rear seats folded down, the volume expands to 1,380 liters.

The Rapid Spaceback will be offered with four gasoline and two diesel engines. The most efficient unit will have CO2 emissions of 99 grams per km.

The five-door hatchback will go on sale in Europe in October, a month after its debut at the Frankfurt auto show. Skoda did not disclose prices but reports said the car will cost about 15,000 euros in Germany, 1,000 euros more than the notchback.

The Rapid notchback, shown, will be joined by the Rapid Spaceback in October..

Skoda is expanding is product lineup and entering new segments in a bid to boost annual global vehicle sales to 1.5 million by 2018. The brand's volume fell 6 percent to 464,600 in the first half.
